June 19th, 2012 by master

The free summer block party to bring together residents of North Seattle returns this weekend to the Oak Tree Cinema parking lot as we again Celebrate North Seattle.

The third annual event, sponsored by Oak Tree Dental, the U.S. Navy and Epic Life Church, is from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 24.

Entertainment for the entire family will include live music from local band Buckets of Rain, bounce houses and carnival games for the kids, food, and door prizes and gift from a number of local businesses and community groups. From a news release:

“We love what we’ve experienced in this event,” says block party logistics coordinator Averi Norgaard. “To me, this is more than just a block party – it’s a collective step toward creating community along Aurora Avenue in North Seattle.”

In addition to entertainment, local businesses will have informative booths, and North Seattle Rotary Club and Salvation Army are bringing back the Shoes for Souls Project, which aims to collect 1,000 pairs of new shoes for children and youth in crisis situations in the North Seattle. Event attendees are encouraged to donate a brand new pair of shoes to help reach the goal.

It's time again to Celebrate North Seattle

June 20th, 2011 by master

The North Seattle community will come together again this summer for the second annual Celebrate North Seattle block party from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 26, in Oak Tree Village.

The first annual Celebrate North Seattle in 2010.

The Rotary Club of North Seattle, Epic Life Church and North Seattle Minuteman Press are sponsoring the free event, which will be hosted in the Oak Tree Cinema parking lot off of Aurora.

“The block party idea started because the community needed more positive events to gather at,” Epic Life Church Pastor Keith Carpenter said in a news release. “Last year, we saw how much good exists in North Seattle when people were given a chance to meet and celebrate.”

There will be entertainment from local musician Sid Law, inflatables, children games and food, as well as door prizes and gift bags from local businesses and community groups.

Attendees also are asked to bring a new pair of shoes for the launch of the event’s Shoes for Souls Project, a joint effort of the North Seattle Rotary Club and the Salvation Army North. The goal of this project is to raise 1,000 pairs of new shoes for children and youth in crisis situations in the North Seattle community.

“We’re all in this together,” said Local Seattle Cycle Center owner Bud Myers, who attended last year’s event. “Working towards building a stronger community requires everyone believing it can happen and offering what they have to make it happen.”

Celebrate North Seattle and more this weekend

June 11th, 2010 by master

Maple Leafers likely don’t cross the freeway as often to go to AMC Loews Oak Tree Cinemas now that Thornton Place Stadium is open, but Celebrate North Seattle aims to help you learn more about many of the other businesses in Oak Tree Village and along the nearby stretch of the Aurora corridor.

The free community block party, which takes place from 2-6 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Oak Tree Cinemas, 10006 Aurora Ave. N., will feature entertainment for the whole family including music from Sid Law, inflatables, children’s games and food. In addition, door prizes and gift bags will be provided by a variety of local businesses and community groups.

“This is just about getting to know each other so that we can build a flourishing community,” said event spokesperson Casey Ties, a member of Epic Life Church, which is one of the three main sponsors of the event. “It’s a really simple concept of knowing who our neighbors are and seeing the good that’s in North Seattle and seeing the good that’s along Aurora.”

Other main sponsors of the inaugural event are Oak Tree Cinemas and Northwest Face, but Ties said about 10 smaller businesses also are sponsors and will have tables at the block party to help you learn more about them.

2 dead at Aurora motel

May 3rd, 2010 by master

Breaking News: Seattle Police and Seattle Fire are at the scene of a motel on Aurora Avenue and North 86th Street, where the motel manager found the bodies of a man and a woman in one of the rooms.

SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson says it looks like a murder-suicide, and that the bodies have been there for several days. Jamieson says preliminary indications are that the man killed the woman, then himself. Police recovered a handgun from the room at the Way West Motel.
