Snow to arrive overnight – UPDATE

December 31st, 2016 by Mike

Update :

Noon. Sunny. All over.

7 a.m. Sunday.

Lightly snowing here at elevation. Dusting on the ground, rooftops.

From the National Weather Service in Seattle this afternoon:

*UPDATE* Lowland snow is possible through New Year’s morning. The highest amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the East Puget Sound Lowlands, and western Whatcom and Skagit counties. Up to 2 inches are possible with locally higher amounts in the Bellevue, Seattle and Tacoma metro areas, Bremerton and vicinity, and the Hood Canal area. All other lowland areas will probably see an inch or less. For the Olympics and Cascades, 3 to 6 inches are possible. Snow will make roads and surfaces slick, so people that are out and about tonight and tomorrow morning should use caution!

The elevation of Maple Leaf is 466 feet above sea level, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation. We’re the third-highest hill in Seattle.

By Monday night temperatures are forecast to hit 20 degrees.

Plenty of property crimes here (and everywhere)

December 31st, 2016 by Mike

Nate emails this week:

We created a police report this morning related to a miter saw theft from our garage last night, but wanted to follow up with a notification to neighbors.

Our garage door sensor tripped after we had left the garage last night causing the door to go back up and leave the garage wide open without us being aware. Sometime between 5.30 p.m. last night and 8.00 a.m. this morning our Dewalt DW715 miter saw and miter saw stand were stolen. It does not appear that anything else was stolen from the garage.

We appreciate your help recovering this stolen item, or preventing similar events in the future through neighborhood awareness. Thanks.

Property crimes are frequent in Maple Leaf – and throughout the city. The map above shows police reports for those crimes – bike theft, burglaries, car prowls, mail theft – during 2016.

Can’t see the neighborhood boundaries for the crime reports? Right.

Another neighbor emails:

Hello – Overnight Dec. 29 – 30, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., our locked garage was broken into (literally the garage door was broken and forced open). The thieves stole a high-end Mercier bicycle and potentially some tools. The bike is extra small (sized for a 5-foot-2 inch person), with aero handlebars, carbon fiber stem, and a butterfly seat. It is by far the nicest bicycle I have ever owned and I want it back!

More theft/crime in Maple Leaf – report it!

December 18th, 2016 by Mike

Amy emails:

Hi Mike & neighbors~

I’m writing to let everyone know that lots of thefts are happening in our neighborhood right now… Can you please remind our neighbors that it is ever-so-crucial to file a police report for even the most benign theft? It’s very easy to do online, and you can even include pictures.

In a recent crime prevention meeting we learned that Officer Kennedy (the Maple Leaf community officer) was not even aware of our growing problems of mail theft, package theft (including home-delivered groceries), car prowls, etc. If a police report is not filed, the police department is not aware of the growing issue and the need to justify more patrolling (& hiring).

Crime – car prowls, mail theft, burglaries – have been a constant theme since Maple Leaf Life launched six-ish years ago.  We have never managed to demonstrate we are more victimized then the rest of the city – and we’ve tried. (Map shows police reports here since the beginning of November.)

Many neighbors appreciate news of crime occurring here. Some don’t. We’ve had people complain that the bank robbery we posted really occurred – not here! -but in some other neighborhood  (i.e., literally across the street in Northgate), that we are conflating Maple Leaf with the dreaded Pinehurst, that reporting crime news lowers their property value.

A good summation of our response(s) from five years ago is here (note the comments):

Roundup of neighborhood crimes – and why we write about them.

“We do operate on the basic assumption that it’s better to know than to not know.”

Amy continues:

In the past week alone, I’ve found…

*  several piles of stolen (& opened) mail around 12th Ave NE, 15th Ave NE, Ne 98th, NE 97th, & NE 96th.

* 2 stolen bags of home delivered groceries scattered on the sidewalk.

* an increase of empty beer bottles on the streets & in round-abouts on 12th Ave NE.

And since early November I’ve heard of several home burglaries and car prowls, and have also been the victim of similar crimes myself in the past two months.

A Twitter feed of our Neighborhood’s Police Beat (L2, aka Lincoln 2), can be found here:

https://twitter.com/seattlepdl2?lang=en

Please, let’s be extra alert for one another and report suspicious activity and signs of theft, even if not of your own property.

PS: Some reporting info from SPD, so that you have it handy to relay….

Maple Leaf neighborhood caroling night?

December 14th, 2016 by Mike

Over at our Facebook page, Kam has posted:

Hey Maple Leafers- I was wondering if anyone would be interested in participating in a neighborhood caroling night? I would love to help organize. Maybe we could meet at the park, pick a route (similar to the Halloween trick or treating route) and sing our Christmas hearts out?

Anyone interested? I grew up in a very small town, and caroling is absolutely one thing I miss this time of year…such a pick me up! Let me know what you think!

You can leave comments on her post.
