Over at Crosscut, writer David Kroman has posted on The Shanty Tavern, 9002 Lake City Way N.E.

The first thing to know about Seattle’s last roadhouse is that it’s only open on Fridays. And sometimes not even then.

Drivers who take the time to look between the chaos of Lake City Way – past the rodeo-themed truck dealer, past Pandora’s strip club, past the assisted living apartments that wall the four-lane highway – will find what looks like an old house.

Read the full piece here.

The last time we heard about The Shanty was in 2011, on this strip-club piece that drew 58 (!) comments.

  1. The Shanty only has a liquor license that covers beer and wine. If you had a liquor license that sold liquor I am sure you would make a small fortune off the strip club patrons.
The business model is (as I understand it) the dude paid off the building many years ago and keeps it open to stay busy and pay the property taxes while he waits to cash in on a multi-million dollar sale that will eventually happen.
Then we can look forward to more condos or maybe another strip club or pot shop.
That property is pretty valuable I am sure and a tavern probably wont be financially viable once it flips

pure speculation but I did chat up the owner a few times about it

  2. I live right by The Shanty and used to go see rockabilly, surf, rock and punk shows there fairly regularly when it was open every day. It’s really the only live music venue in the hood. But it’s been so inconsistent with barely being open Fridays only I just stopped paying attention to it. They could be making a lot of money off of strip club patrons next door selling booze and parking (most nights when they are closed, their parking lot is half filled from cars from the car lot across the street and half filled from Pandora’s overflow) . Their business model makes no sense to me, I keep hoping they will sell it to someone else that will run it like a proper bar and music venue. But I’m glad to see it’s still around, even if it’s so infrequent.

  3. Enough about the weather! Tell us more about the new men’s hair salon that is taking over the Maple Leaf Pharmacy space. They have business cards on the windows. A men’s hair salon. Hmm.
MLL: Believe those cards are just an attempt to attract clients to the business, which is on 15th Avenue Northeast. Landlord says there not yet a plan for the space. Will post on it shortly.
