Curling, a flea market, politics and more

Spring may already be blooming outside, but there still are plenty of Seattleites who are longing for a little more winter to soothe their new-found curling mania.

But you need not long, you need only attend this weekend’s open house at the Granite Curling Club, “the only dedicated curling club west of North Dakota and south of Alaska,” writes Nicole Tsong for our partner The Seattle Times.

The club, located just off Aurora Avenue North at 1440 N. 128th St., is opening its doors to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Cost is $15 per person, and a maximum of $40 for a family. For more information, call 362-2446.

There’s plenty more for the family this weekend, including Family Fun Night at the Northgate Community Center, 10510 Fifth Ave. N.E., from 6:30-8:30 tonight. For $5, the whole family can crowd onto the community center’s mats for a viewing of the family-friendly movie “The Secret of NIMH.” Bring blankets and pillows – and even your PJs – and the center will provide the popcorn.

The following day, head back to the community center for the annual Northgate Flea Market. If you’re in need of some spring cleaning, you still have time to reserve a table for $20, and a second for $10. Or head to the flea market as a customer from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to see what treasures you can find.

There’s also an opportunity this weekend to meet Senate candidate David Frockt, who will be at the Urban Bakery, 7850 E. Green Lake Drive N. Ste. A, from 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Frockt is running against incumbent Ken Jacobsen for the 46th District seat, of which Maple Leaf is a part.

If you have yet to see Woodland Park Zoo’s Night Exhibit, our partner PhinneyWood reports that this is your last weekend to see it after cost-cutting measures close it on Monday. Although most of the animals will be sent to other exhibits throughout the zoo, some will be sent to other zoos around the nation.

Also in the neighborhood, the Phinney Neighborhood Association Wine Taste will be from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N. Tickets cost $25 for neighborhood association members and $30 for the general public; designated driver tickets are $10.

And if you’re in need of a good old-fashioned pancake breakfast the next morning, head up to the Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave. N. Get your fill of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at a cost of $5 for adults, $4 for youth, and children 4 and younger are free. And it’s all going toward Seattle Parks and Recreation scholarships for low-income families. Have time to volunteer? Call 684-7524
