Crime in Maple Leaf

Life in Maple Leaf is safer than in many other North Seattle neighborhoods, and much safer than in the city as a whole. But residents here aren’t feeling that way, they told police officials at the Maple Leaf Community Council’s annual meeting on crime and public safety.

“I’ve been here since 1977,” one man said. “It’s been a lazy, lazy neighborhood. But within the last year a rash of stuff’s been going on on our street.”

That includes cars broken into, homes burglarized and – at the turn of the year – two armed robberies on Roosevelt Way, at Reckless Video and the Maple Leaf Pharmacy.

“He had a ski mask. He had a gun. He knew what he was doing. He had robbed before,” Robbery Detective Mike Magan told the meeting crowd of more than 125 at the Olympic View Elementary School on Jan. 27.

The robber first scouted the pharmacy Dec. 21, Magan said, and was caught on surveillance cameras installed only the day before. “Forty-five minutes later a lone white gunman jumps over the counter with a gun and orders an employee to the floor.”  The robbery left with Oxycontin, a powerful narcotic, and he left behind his photograph, which lead to his arrest a few days later. “It was a great job done by the people at the Maple Leaf Pharmacy,” Magan said.

Police believe he is the same man who robbed the video store. “The MO is the same as the video store. His command and control of the scene were the same. Same clothes, same handgun – a silver 9 mm found in the back of his car,” said Magan.

He has been released from prison just six weeks earlier, and has now confessed to the pharmacy robbery here and to one in Ballard, and will be tried on federal charges that could mean 30 years behind bars, Magan said.

Residents at the meeting had plenty of questions.

Have there been any more armed robberies in Maple Leaf. “No,” said Magan.

Is the tagging I see gang graffiti? “If it’s gang graffiti you can read it,” said Sgt. Dianne Newsome of the department’s north precinct. “Most of the tagging here tries to be like gang graffiti but doesn’t really say anything. Most of the gangs around here are gone.”

Are more banks getting robbed? “That was up for awhile, but it’s gone down recently,” said Magan. He added that Washington  has more pharmacy robberies than any other state in the country, and that 95 percent of the robbers are drug addicts.

Sgt. Newsome, who runs the north precinct’s community policing team, told the crowd:  “Crime numbers in the Maple Leaf neighborhood are low when compared to the north precinct as a whole, and very low in comparison to the whole city.”

Also addressing the meeting were Tim Burgess, chairman of the Seattle City Council’s public safety committee; Sally Bagshaw, committee vice chairwoman; new City Attorney Pete Holmes; and a police crime prevention coordinator, Diane Horswill.
