We’re still waiting for the city to post the final plans for the proposed Beaver Pond Natural Area renovation, but in the meantime we have some details from forest steward Ruth Williams, who was one of about 35 people at last week’s meeting.
One of the main goals of the plan is to prevent flash flooding problems by rechanneling Thornton Creek, explained Mark Garff with the consulting group The Watershed Co. However, that requires the removal of some trees from the area of the beaver pond, at 8th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 105th Street, which already lost a few of its trees this winter.

Trees had been substantially damaged by the beavers this winter and were “dying or standing dead,” according to Seattle Parks and Recreation.
The new trail system, which is part of the plan because it will both increase access to and protect the natural area, will be covered in crushed rock, with elevated trails in the areas that frequently flood in winter.
Because safety was a key issue at the initial planning meeting for the project that took place in January, plans also include removing the “graffiti wall” behind Pacific Medical Centers, at 10416 Fifth Ave. N.E., which will be covered in a post and wire system that will be covered in plants.
Neighbors at the meeting asked The Watershed Co. to consider adding pedestrian access on Eighth Avenue Northeast, as well as making sure the final restoration plans included benches and ADA access.
We’ll post again when the final plan is up to give you more information.

It’s never happened before in over 9 years, but Bobbi the Black and White Tuxedo Cat has been missing since Tuesday.

From Mark:
She is a 9.5 year old fixed female and her name is Bobbi. She has a stumpy tail which makes her look like she has a bobbed tail, thus her name. She is rather shy of contact with strangers. She lives on Northeast 94th Street nearly at the corner on the west side of Roosevelt Way Northeast. We last saw her Tuesday evening at about 7 p.m. on our back porch.
If you know anything about Bobbi call 206-356-6411 or 206-372-7556.

It’s a name right out of a cheap crime novel: Maxfield P. Dare.
The language prosecutors and police use to describe him fits, too. A “prolific burglar,” with 15 felony convictions at age 18, according to charging papers.
Dare is suspected in some of a string of North End burglaries of homes, often at night while the owners are asleep inside.
He couldn’t have done all of them, though. Dare was arrested in Lake City on March 6 on March 10, after being spotted in a stolen car in Lake City on March 6, and burglaries were continuing as late as March 10.
In a statemete the King County Prosecutor’s office said:
Repeat burglar Maxfield Dare, 18, is facing new charges for several recent crimes in the Seattle area. Dare was charged today with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Trafficking in Stolen Property First Degree in connection with two recent North Seattle burglaries during which two cars and other items were allegedly stolen.
The charging documents, in calling Dare a prolific burglar, state “the State is very concerned for the safety of the community.
“The defendant’s M.O. is to break into occupied residences at night and steal cars….This is the exact same thing he did in 10 of his 15 felony convictions when he was a a juvenile,” the documents state. “Residential burglaries are inherently dangerous.”
Dare remains in jail on $200,000 bail. According to the charging papers:
Dare and two co-defendants are (also) charged with Robbery Second Degree for allegedly robbing three men of their cell phones and wallets in the U District on March 2.

Safety was on the minds of many at a January meeting about renovations to Beaver Pond Natural Area, just weeks after nearly 50 trees were illegally pruned allegedly to increase sightlines in the Maple Leaf park. Tonight, the 50-plus people who attended that meeting plus other members of the community are invited to return to the Northgate Community Center to comment on the final restoration plan.

The main goals of the $500,000 project, which has been funded by the city’s Parks and Green Spaces Levy, are to refine and complete channel work by relocating two portions of Thornton Creek, remove invasive plants and restore native habitat.
Additionally, the proposal presented at the January meeting included plans to make the natural area more accessible while also protecting it. Although improved trails, signs and access might lead to more people visiting the park, such renovations also are likely to prevent people from venturing into the protected areas.
Learn more about how your comments have changed the restoration plans when The Watershed Co. presents its final proposal for the restoration, from 7-9 p.m. at the Northgate Community Center, 10510 Fifth Ave. N.E.

So far, all of the area medical marijuana dispensaries cropping up are either just on or barely outside of Maple Leaf’s borders, and the newest addition is no exception.
In the last month or so, The Green Skunk opened just north of Maple Leaf in the Northgate/Pinehurst neighbohoorhood at 11231 Roosevelt Way N.E.
They’ve already gotten a writeup in the Seattle Weekly’s Toke Signals blog — not even the new Patty’s Eggnest has received that kind of publicity yet!

Update 6:40 p.m. Steady snow returns, half an inch could accumulate overnight.
Update 4 p.m. Snowing steadily. About 1,300 Seattle City Light customers without power, including south of Green Lake and in Ravenna.
It was snowing at 2 a.m. in Maple Leaf, and more is possible until after 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
LOCAL ACCUMULATIONS OF AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE ON CARS AND GRASSY SURFACES. IN ADDITION ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS TODAY COULD PRODUCE SMALL HAIL.
Maybe a thunderstorm, too.
There’s an inch of snow in Bellevue, and chains were required earlier at Highway 18 over Tiger Mountain.

Update March 13: This just in from Terrie Johnston, Seattle Police crime prevention coordinator:
Burglary News: Even though North Precinct SPD patrol officers, plain-clothes units and our proactive Burglary/Theft Unit were able to make 3 separate arrests this weekend of burglars, the crimes continue.
Here are some of the burglaries that occurred since March 9th.
13000 30 NE
12700 27 NE
12000 33 NE
1500 blk NE 91
800 blk. NE 89
2500 NE 134
Some of the entries were made through forcing open back windows; some came in through unlocked front doors. Loaded guns; bank documents; checkbooks; jewelry; laptops; Flat screen TV; pills; wine; and cash were all reported stolen in the above crimes. In one of the burglaries, neighbors called 9-1-1 minutes after they heard breaking glass in the apt. complex. K9 arrived to track the fleeing suspect, but the officer was unable to apply the K9 due to the number of residents who were gathered around to watch the incident unfold. (If K9 officers are tracking through your yard or neighborhood, go inside so the Police dog’s nose can do its amazing thing.)
This is no time to get complacent. Please continue to lock up; report all suspicious activity to 9-1-1; share information with your neighbors; keep personal banking information locked away or shredded, this is gold to Identity thieves. Consider storing guns in lockers or safes when you are away from the house. Keep an inventory list of your valuables. As always, I am available for Block Watch meetings or to assist with any public safety concerns.

A neighbor emails that he saw a car prowler in action overnight on Eighth Avenue Northeast around Northeast 88th Street:
Late Sunday night - Monday morning at 2:30 a.m. while in the middle of feeding my twin babies I decided to look out my front window on a windy night only to see a skinny white male 5-foot-8 or so, 18-22 years old, walk up 8th trying the door handles on my truck and my neighbors’ the whole way up the street.
He concludes: “Keep your doors locked and remember when you are sleeping they are like rats creeping on our great neighborhood.”

Necropsy results of two beavers found dead at Meadowbrook Pond have been released, and signs point to natural causes. Chris Anderson, wildlife biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, provided this update:
Our state wildlife veterinarian performed necropsies on the two beaver WDFW and SPU obtained from Meadowbrook Pond. We suspect natural causes of death for these beaver. No evidence of disease.
One, a juvenile female, died due to a likely predator event and fallout from that. Leg was severely injured in a manner indicative of a large predator – in that area a coyote or unrestrained dog would easily explain the injury noted. The female was emaciated, possibly due to the leg injury and not being able to take care of itself that well afterward. Suspected cause of death is emaciation in this individual.
The other was an adult male. Reason for cause of death was more uncertain but appears it was hit by something. He had internal bleeding and severe hemorrhaging in his lungs. Suspected cause of death was this pulmonary hemorrhaging due to blunt trauma in this individual. Body was in good physical condition, he was eating well. No broken bones. Could have been vehicle collision, situation of getting trapped in e.g. built stormwater structures during an acute high water flood event in a system, or even something unrelated to built environment such as being in a den that partially collapsed, fallen tree/vegetation and resulting impact, defending itself against another animal, etc. I would only be speculating as to what ultimately caused demise but many situations in urban area – both built or natural environment induced, that could have resulted in the adult’s death.

Seattle Police overnight said the string of North End burglaries occurring while the occupants are home continues.
On 3/10/12, at approximately 8:24 a.m., the complainant/resident called 9-1-1 to report that her home had been burglarized in the 500 block of Northeast 72nd Street. She estimated that it occurred between 9:30 the night before thru 8:00 a.m. The suspect(s) gained entry through an apparent unlocked door off a rear basement. The suspect(s) stole a purse.
The victim was home with several other adult residents. One of the residents returned home at about 2:30 a.m. and recalled hearing a noise. It is possible the burglary was interrupted.
Police earlier this week said they made an arrest in Shoreline that might be connected to the burglaries. But they continue - two days later Maple Leaf resident David Miller commented:
FYI, people still need to be careful. Someone tried the doorknob at our house this evening just before 10 p.m. I was in another part of the house and assumed it was my wife coming home from a meeting. By the time I got to the door, the person was gone.
I called 911 to report it and the police were here very fast. (Kudos to SPD!)
In related news, Channel 13 Fox TV is reporting on a string of 45 “cat burglaries” of occupied homes in Pierce County. “The suspect(s) enter the home late in the evening or early morning, often through open doors or windows while residents are sleepings. Stolen items include cash, jewelry, electronics, firearms and purses and wallets.”
And Seattle Police, who ran “Oliver’s Twist,” a year-long sting operation to nab thieves selling stolen goods, posted 428 photos of recovered goods here. See something stolen from you. Call the Oliver’s Twist hotline at 206-733-9616.
