Upcoming fun planned at Eagles

February 8th, 2013 by Mai Ling

After nearly two years in its location at 8201 Lake City Way N.E., the nation’s first-ever Eagles club is going strong with events planned throughout February and beyond.

We were too late to post about their Super Bowl party, which they celebrated with a new projection TV, but they’re following up the festivities with a Mardi Gras celebration from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, featuring a Cajun/Zydeco dance with the band Swamp Soul. Cost is $15, and Mardi Gras costumes are welcome. Come early for a free Zydeco dance lesson at 7 p.m. with the Gator Boy.

Just in time for (a late) Valentine’s Day, Eagles Mother Aerie No. 1 is planning a a Sweetheart’s Sock Hop from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, featuring the 1950s-’60s band Fever. Cost is $10, and as Aerie President Dan Kerege says, it’s “a great way to get out of the doghouse, if you forgot Valentine’s Day.”

In addition, there will be a chili cook-off on Feb. 24, although details still are in the works.

In the meantime, Kerege reminds non-members that they’re invited to check out the private social club, including at its karaoke night Friday, Feb. 15. In addition, Kerege says every Friday is Steak Night from 6-9 p.m., featuring a 12-ounce rib-eye steak, baked potato, salad, veggies, roll and butter for $14; and every Wednesday is Taco Night, featuring $1 tacos (taco salads available, too).

And if you want to have your own party, he adds that the club has two rooms available for rentals. The larger room includes dance floor and stage, and is suitable for parties, dances, wedding receptions and more, while the smaller room is suitable for club meetings, seminars and classes.

Math and Science Fair returns to Sacajawea

February 6th, 2013 by Mai Ling

Experience feats of brain strength Feb. 13 at Sacajawea Elementary, 9501 20th Ave. N.E., during the Maple Leaf school’s annual Math and Science Fair.

From 6-7:30 p.m., you’re invited to view the more than 150 science and math exhibits created by the students of Sacajawea, as well as exhibits from organizations including UW Neurosciences, The Audubon Society, IslandWood Outdoor Education Center, The Burke Museum and Lice Knowing You.

The event concludes with the catapult egg launch contest from 7:30-8 p.m. on the lower playground (rain or shine), which will pit Sacajawea students against one another to see whose entry (built from a standard kit of materials) can fly the farthest, while still protecting its delicate cargo.

To top it all off, Dante’s Inferno Dogs will be selling gourmet sausages, chips and drinks (cash or credit cards accepted, with a 25 cent service charge for credit cards under $10 ).

Check out the new Real Property Associates digs

February 4th, 2013 by Mai Ling

Real Property Associates today officially moved into 7500 Roosevelt Way N.E.

Today marks the beginning of a new era for the intersection where Roosevelt Way and Lake City Way intersect with Northeast 75th Street.

In a prime location that brings traffic from well beyond Maple Leaf’s borders, the former eyesore at 7500 Roosevelt Way N.E. is now the home of Real Property Associates.

Just two years ago, we spoke with RPA co-owner Jay Young, who said the company had hopes to move into the space but still was waiting to see what would happen with the economy.

The vacant building at 7500 Roosevelt Way N.E. two years ago.

Let’s take their opening today as a sign that things are moving in the right direction!

In another sign of good things to come to Maple Leaf, the space vacated when Bead World purchased its building and moved into an even bigger neighboring space also has a new tenant.

According to its website, Espresso Repair Experts opened Feb. 1 at 9522 Roosevelt Way N.E. We’ll try to learn more about the business in the days to come, so please stay tuned!

Celebrate your neighbors on Feb. 9

February 4th, 2013 by Mai Ling

We know how much Maple Leaf likes to celebrate its neighbors, so we wanted to make sure you knew about the next excuse to gather: Neighbor Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The 19th annual Seattle-wide celebration is designated as a day “to reach out to neighbors, create new friends, and express thanks to those who help make your neighborhood a great place to live,” according to a news release from the city.

It recommends these ideas for participation:

  • Plan an activity for your neighborhood such as a block party, potluck, or work party. The Neighbor Appreciation Day website provides ideas, tools, resources, and templates to help community members organize an activity. Once scheduled, the event can be posted to the events calendar.
  • Attend one of the many community activities listed on the events calendar. Many Seattle Fire stations along with Seattle parks and neighborhoods are hosting celebrations and work parties.
  • Send Neighbor Appreciation Day e-cards to your neighbors. The selection features artwork from past winners of the Neighbor Appreciation Day Student Art Contest.
  • Share a story or two about your favorite neighbors. Community members can post stories about great neighbors or their neighborhood.

Do you have plans to celebrate Neighbor Appreciation Day?

UPDATE: Among activities planned in Maple Leaf is a Feet First Stairway Walk described below:

Nature, urban art and environmental design - this tour of Seattle stairs has it all! We’ll visit Thornton Creek, the biggest year-round stream in Seattle, provides a running theme: you’ll cross and re-cross it; view it bank-side and from tree-canopy height. And you’ll see how it’s been re-engineered by both humans and animals (yup, beavers)!

Walk Leader: Founder and publisher of Outdoors NW, Carolyn Price

Numbers: 4.7 miles: 326 steps down, 136 steps up

When: All walks start at 10 am on Saturday, February 9. Please RSVP for detailed instructions about the meet up location.

Flying Squirrel adds gluten-free pizza to menu

February 2nd, 2013 by Mai Ling

In addition to ordering delivery from Flying Squirrel Pizza Co., you now can make that a gluten-free pizza, co-owner Bill Coury told us.

When the restaurant at 8310 Fifth Ave. N.E. first opened in September 2011, they touted gluten-free options that included salads and other sides, but what many gluten-free diners really wanted was gluten-free pizza. At the time, Coury told us:

“We’re just not carrying [gluten-free pizza] right now because to be honest, it’s all terrible. We’ve tried recipes, we keep trying recipes, it’s just not up to our quality standards that we expect. … When we say gluten-free options, we mean that yes, we have a plethora of gluten-free salads, we just don’t have any gluten-free pizza. It’s not that we’ve given up on it, but everything we’ve tried so far just is not good.”

Sounds like they’ve finally perfected their recipe! If you give it a try, let us know how it is.

Maple Leaf Community Council meeting digs into transportation

January 30th, 2013 by Mike

Traffic was all the rage for the first hour and a half of the Maple Leaf Community Council’s January general meeting.

Still to come are discussions of the Reservoir Park - opening this summer, and emergency preparedness.

But right now, transportation is the key for the four dozen or so neighbors attending.

“Moms, on cell phones, taking their kids to Olympic View Elementary, are the No. 1 speeders on Northeast 97th Street,” one neighbor said.

There was discussion of the recent “vigilantes” on Northeast 103rd and 105th streets, the problems with Banner Way and merging onto Interstate 5, the “rabbit warren” of side streets between Northeast 75th and Northeast Northgate Way, traffic muddles at Northeast 105th Street and Roosevelt Way Northeast, and additional traffic from growth.

The community council is taking notes. We will, too. What’s your favorite/hated traffic issue in Maple Leaf?

More street vigilantism on N.E. 103rd in Maple Leaf?

January 29th, 2013 by Mike

Maple Leaf’s street vigilantes - or somebody - appear to have struck again.

This photo shows the “do not enter” signs on Northeast 103rd Street just outside the Maple Leaf Community Garden P-Patch.

Dana emailed earlier this morning: “Given your coverage of the non-SDOT ‘do not enter’ sign on 105th,thought you’d like to know that someone has put black garbage bags over all of the ‘dead end’ and ‘do not enter’ signs on 103rd. Doubt this was SDOT, either.”

The covered “dead end” sign is at 103rd and Fifth Avenue Northeast. The “do not enter” signs face west midway between Fifth and Eighth. They are routinely ignored by drivers.

“What a little war we’re having,” DW commented on our earlier post on the apparently citizen-assisted “do not enter” sign on nearby Northeast 105th Street at Eighth Avenue Northeast.

The remains of that sign, which the Seattle Department of Transportation says it did not install, are shown below.
