Weekend news from nearby neighborhoods

Periodically we’ll round up items of interest to Maple Leaf residents, even if they’re just nearby. (Besides, we’ve wanted to write “nearby” in a headline ever since the fine local news site Crosscut improbably stuck “nearby” on its masthead.)

  • This evening the friendly black cat we wrote about earlier will be up for adoption, along with many other pets, at Animal Talk Rescue, 6514 Roosevelt Way N.E. The adoption event runs from 6-9 p.m. Animal Talk also relies heavily on volunteers, especially foster homes, to take in homeless animals that can’t be in the shelter due to illness or young age.
  • Speaking of animals, Julie, a dog trainer who lives in Maple Leaf and fosters dogs for the Seattle Animal Shelter, writes to say the shelter  is hosting an Adopt-A-Thon tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 12, at its Interbay Urban Center, 1819 15th Ave. W. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • And, still speaking of homeless animals, here’s advance notice that tickets are now on sale for the Homeward Pet Adoption Center’s annual Fur Ball & Auction. The center’s Franni writes: “The shelter is located in Woodinville, but a sizable percentage of our adoptive families come from the Seattle area. The auction itself is in Seattle, and 13% of shelter staff members (2 of 16!) live in the Maple Leaf neighborhood!” That auction for the center, which is the largest no-kill, non-profit animal adoption center in western Washington, is on Saturday, Feb. 26.
  • Our partner site My Green Lake notes that tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 12, will be a busy day around the lake.

More than 3,000 registrants are expected at the Love ‘em or Leave ‘em Valentine’s Day Dash at Green Lake Park. The 5K run/walk will begin on the southwest side of the lake, near the Aqua Theater, at 9:30 a.m.

West Green Lake Way, near the Aqua Theater parking lot, will be completely closed from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

From 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., clockwise traffic will not be permitted in the lane closest to the park on all perimeter roads around Green Lake. Aurora Avenue North will remain open.

  • Update 2/17: Tim, from Peaks Frozen Custard, sent us this mail:

Thank you for covering Peak’s Frozen Custard Event- It was a huge success serving around 600 people and raised hundreds of dollars which will go to ADWAS and Seattle Music Project!

Peace, Love and Frozen Custard,

Peaks Frozen Custard – owned by two 20-year Maple Leaf residents – is celebrating two years in business with “Cones for a Cause” this Sunday,  February 13th, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Peaks will offer $2 cones with $1 going to local causes such as Maple Leaf’s ADWAS shelter. There will also be face painting for the kids. Peaks is located at 1026 N.E. 65th St.
