It’s only the first week of December, and already Maple Leaf is the scene of a “Christmas miracle.”

According to Washington’s Lottery, a customer at our very own 7-Eleven at 9126 Roosevelt Way N.E. just won $170,000, although Green Lake resident Darcy Breene at first thought the prize was for much less. From the news release:

First she thought she won $1,700 then $17,000. Breene had to call the clerk over to find out the final amount. “He said, ‘No, no, I’ve been waiting for you to come in, it’s $170,000.'”

That’s when an onlooker told Breene to go home and hide her ticket. “I went home and hid my ticket in in my room. I kept checking throughout the night to make sure it was still there,” she said. “When I woke up this morning, I was worried it was all a dream.”

The Seattle real estate agent said winning the Lottery is a Christmas miracle. “Things are getting better for the industry, but this money will be very helpful,” Breene said. When asked what she’d do with the money she said she’d buy her new Boxer puppy, Cora, a doggy bed and put the rest in the bank. Breene brought Cora with her to claim the check because the affable puppy ate her orchid that morning.

Thanks to The Maple Leafer for its post!

  1. Great news for sure. Now you need to contact your CPA and find out just how to keep most of it. A new tax bracket. Higher rates. A new “bulls-eye” on your back brought to you by your federal government. I’d hide more than the ticket myself. Always pisses me off when I see a lotto winner with $. After taxes it’s 1/2 or less. Then they take more and more due to you’re “rich”.
