It may have started in 1980 as mostly a racquet sports club, but over the years the Northgate Seattle Athletic Club has evolved along with the changing community into a fitness center that offers healthy fun for the entire family.

And with 30 years under its belt at its location just north of Thornton Place at 333 N.E. 97th St., members of the the Seattle Athletic Club plan to celebrate its anniversary with style at a gala from 6-9 tonight that will look back on the club’s history and honor its many members over the years.

“We have a lot of members who have been around the entire time that we’ve been here,” said operations manager Angie McCaw, who added that former longtime members and even some past instructors also have been invited to the event, “just to say thank you for their support over the years.”

The fitness center — which just last week offered a Groupon promotion that Maple Leaf Life wrote about — is only open to members, as is the gala, but McCaw says the club is offering more events that are open to the community, such as its “Kid’s Court” child care center and summer camps.

Later this summer, she said the athletic club plans to hold its annual summer open house, which usually features an outdoor circuit training course and a variety of classes to show members of the community what the gym has to offer, as well as family fun including a barbecue and a bouncy house for the kids.

McCaw added that in addition to the full gym, swimming pool, weight room and racquet sports, Seattle Athletic Club also has “everything that’s pretty hot right now.”

And if you join today, you can go to the gala, too!
