After new Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn launches his yearlong youth initiative in a speech tonight, his staff will bring the proposals to city neighborhoods beginning next month.

The meeting for Maple Leaf will be at Northgate Elementary School, 11725 First Ave. N.E., on March 1, lasting from 7-8:30 p.m. The crowd there will break into small groups for discussion, each with a facilitator. The school is a few blocks north of Northgate Way, on the west side of Interstate 5.

McGinn has drafted former Mayor Norm Rice to front the initiative. “Can we really close the gap between disparities of Latinos, African-Americans and our immigrant community as they relate to education, versus everybody in the city?” Rice asked KPLU radio.

Tonight’s speech by McGinn is at 7 at the Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave. S.
