Weekend fun in the North End

The sunny skies are here for the weekend, but that doesn’t mean you have to go downtown for a good time.

It’ll be perfect weather to get out in the garden, which also is perfect timing for the quarterly work party at the Maple Leaf Community Garden, an event where you and your neighbors are invited to volunteer a few hours of your weekend to help mulch and plant.

This photo of a March 2009 work party is from Doug Daily’s Gruffducks page.

The event is from 9:30 a.m. to about noon, and volunteers are asked to notify Seattle community garden coordinator Kenya Fredie at 684-0264.

Looking for something a little more … entertaining? Just up north in Shoreline you can check out the award-winning RNG dance crew – made up of a half-dozen tween girls, who have “sass and spice equal to that of girls twice their age,” writes Marian Liu for our partner The Seattle Times.

The group of best friends, who took first place last year in the Hip Hop International junior-division competition, and sixth in the world, will take the stage along with other crews from their dance studio, Mukilteo’s Connection Performing Arts Center.

Tickets cost $13 to $20, and the show starts at 8 tonight, along with performances at 2 and 8 p.m. tomorrow, at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, 15343 25th Ave. N.E.

If that’s not enough dancing for you, check out the University YMCA’s Belly Dance Benefit tonight at 6:30 at the University Family YMCA, 5003 12th Ave. N.E. The fundraiser for the University District’s Partners with Youth Campaign will feature belly dance performances, a silent auction, a bake sale and door prizes. The suggested donation at the door is $10.

There’s plenty more stage action in North Seattle, including the last weekend of “The Violet Hour” at Seattle Public Theater at the Bathhouse, 7312 W. Green Lake Drive N. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday, with tickets ranging from $15 to $27. Call 542-1300.

Meanwhile, at Magnuson Park, Seattle Music Theatre brings Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” to the stage at 8 p.m. today and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday. Tickets cost $25 to $35. Call 363-2809.

And of course, there is plenty to do downtown as well that the weather will help get you in the mood for. You can check out the Seattle Home Show at Qwest Field Event Center, 800 Occidental Ave. S., which is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. There’s no rush, though: The Home Show will be in town all week long through Feb. 28. Cost is $3 to $10.

If you didn’t get enough of Chinese New Year last weekend, the Chinese Information and Service Center is holding a Lunar New Year Walkathon fundraiser at 9 a.m. Saturday at Safeco Field, 1250 First Ave.

Feel like mixing a few bagpipes in with your Chinese New Year festivities? The annual Gung Haggis Fat Choy celebration, which combines Chinese New Year and the birthday of Robert Burns, the Bard of Scotland, features Chinese and Scottish food and entertainment starting at 5 p.m. Sunday at Ocean City Restaurant Noodle Café, 609 S. Weller St. Cost is $35.
