Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, which is a federal holiday. That means schools, banks and post offices will be closed, along with all branches of the Seattle Public Library and many Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities.

Parks facilities that will be closed:

  • Community centers
  • Teen life centers
  • Environmental learning centers
  • Indoor swimming pools
  • Green Lake Small Craft Center
  • Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center

All boat ramps will remain open, along with the Amy Yee Tennis Center and golf courses at Interbay, Jackson Park, Jefferson Park and West Seattle.

Woodland Park Zoo is offering free admission to all active, retired, and veteran U.S. military personnel and their spouses with valid service identification on Veterans Day. Also, up to four accompanying family members with valid ID will receive $5 off regular zoo admission on Veterans Day. The zoo’s winter hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Garbage collection normal on Veterans Day

November 10th, 2010 by master

Don’t forget to put out your garbage and yard waste tonight or tomorrow morning. Despite the Veterans Day holiday, Seattle Public Utilities has announced normal garbage collection on Thursday, Nov. 11.

However, most other government offices are closed, and the Veterans Day holiday also coincides with the November Seattle Parks and Recreation furlough. All facilities and offices will be closed Thursday, but the Northgate Community Center, 10510 Fifth Ave. N.E., also will be closed Friday, Nov. 12.

Other services and facilities that won’t be available Friday because of the furlough include grounds maintenance; all community centers (except child care and late-night programs, which will still operate); swimming pools; Environmental Learning Centers; Lifelong Recreation (except Food and Fitness programs, which will still operate); and the Business Service Center.

On Monday, parks  facilities and services that will be closed include administrative offices (communications, correspondence, Park Board support, Web management, public outreach, human resources, finance and administration); the Planning and Development Division; and the Magnuson Park office.

The Northgate Library, 10548 Fifth Ave. N.E., also will be closed Thursday in observance of Veterans Day, but as part of its regular hours it also will be closed Friday and Sunday.

In addition, King County Metro Transit will be offering reduced services, so be sure to double-check your schedule before you leave here.

What’s open/closed on President’s Day

February 13th, 2010 by master

Well, we all know Northgate Mall is open and hoping you’ll shop away President’s Day weekend, but come Monday, don’t expect the liquor store or the post office to be open.

Because of the holiday, all government offices will be closed Monday, including the municipal and King County courts, as will be all branches of the Seattle Public Library.

But the Washington State Ferries will be on their regular schedule, and buses are mostly on regular schedules except for limited runs to the University of Washington. However, all Metro bus riders get to celebrate the holiday by paying Sunday fares, and drivers also get park for free, as meters won’t be enforced.

And if Monday is your garbage pickup day, get those cans out there because Seattle Public Utilities’ garbage pickup is on its regular schedule.

Even if the kids won’t be in school Monday, they still can learn because the Woodland Park Zoo is open regular hours, as are the Museum of Flight and the Museum of History and Industry.

However, the Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle Asian Art Museum will be closed.
