Just in case you missed the news a couple of days ago (Watch out! Maple Leaf is “increasingly popular“), Yelp’s Neighborhood Spotlight is now shining on us.
“Hidden away north of downtown, Maple Leaf is home to lots of lucky locals,” says the article, which spotlights several local restaurants.
“Teeming with Tudor-style and bungalow homes, those recent remodels and renovations also came to include some of Seatown’s most sought-after supper spots.”
The Kona Kitchen, shown at right, is called out, as are Cafe Piccolo, the Maple Leaf Grill, Cloud City Coffee and Flying Squirrel Pizza.
Comments from neighbors have added in the Blue Saucer and the Snappy Dragon.

In addition to ordering delivery from Flying Squirrel Pizza Co., you now can make that a gluten-free pizza, co-owner Bill Coury told us.
When the restaurant at 8310 Fifth Ave. N.E. first opened in September 2011, they touted gluten-free options that included salads and other sides, but what many gluten-free diners really wanted was gluten-free pizza. At the time, Coury told us:
“We’re just not carrying [gluten-free pizza] right now because to be honest, it’s all terrible. We’ve tried recipes, we keep trying recipes, it’s just not up to our quality standards that we expect. … When we say gluten-free options, we mean that yes, we have a plethora of gluten-free salads, we just don’t have any gluten-free pizza. It’s not that we’ve given up on it, but everything we’ve tried so far just is not good.”
Sounds like they’ve finally perfected their recipe! If you give it a try, let us know how it is.

Since Flying Squirrel Pizza Co. opened up in Maple Leaf a year ago, its patrons have been asking when they’ll start delivering pizzas. But like their other locations in Seward Park and Ballard, delivery just wasn’t an option. Until now. And only in Maple Leaf.
Starting tonight, the Flying Squirrel website started accepting orders for delivery for the 9,000 households that are within about a 1-mile radius of the Maple Leaf location at 8310 Fifth Ave. N.E..
“We’ve never done delivery so we wanted to focus on a small area to make sure we could do it,” said co-owner Brian Vescovi. The orders can only be placed online, where you must pay by credit card in advance to get your pizza delivered.
If the sudden change has taken you surprise, don’t feel like you missed out on some big announcement. At the end of Day 1, a total of zero orders had been placed on the new system, which was just how they liked it for their “soft opening” that was only announced on Facebook, Vescovi said.
Once they’re sure the system is working properly, he said they plan to send out postcards in the delivery zone announcing the change, along with a $5 off coupon.
Roughly, the delivery zone is the same as the Maple Leaf neighborhood: Lake City to the east, Northgate Way to the north, Interstate 5 to the west, then south barely into the Green Lake neighborhood.
“We want to make sure we do this the best that we can do,” said co-owner Bill Coury.
If the delivery “test” in Maple Leaf is successful, Vescovi said they hope to add delivery to their other locations as well.

After months of waiting, the new Maple Leaf location of Flying Squirrel Pizza Co. is scheduled to open this Thursday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m.
The restaurant is taking the place of the former A New York Pizza Place at 8310 Fifth Ave. N.E., and required more extensive renovations than was originally expected, owner Bill Coury told us at the Maple Leaf Life Summer Social (where we snapped his picture at right).
He also told us the pizzeria would be open in time for Labor Day, and it looks like that deadline will be met. From his email:
A couple Flying Squirrel FAQ’s….
Yep…we’re kid friendly. We don’t have a play area, nor encourage
running around, but we’re a family place!
Yep…we’ll have gluten-free options.
Nope…we don’t sell pizza by the slice.
Yep…we have lots of local beers and wines.
Nope…we don’t sell hard alcohol.
Nope…we don’t deliver.
Yep…we do takeout and love to see the neighborhood folks when they
pick up their pizzas.
Yep…we have amazing, salads, pizzas, appetizers, and sell Molly Moon
ice cream pints to go (also scoops in-house)
And a word of warning: In addition to fighting the Maple Leaf crowds that have been waiting for Flying Squirrel to open, you might have to fight Flying Squirrel’s loyal Seward Park fans for the first couple of weeks while that location is undergoing an extensive renovation. From Flying Squirrel’s Facebook page:
ATTN SEWARD PARK! Flying Squirrel Pizza in Seward is about to undergo a complete kitchen renovation. Due to this, we will unfortunately be closed starting tomorrow, Monday Aug. 29th – Sept. 15th. Sorry! However, we’re opening our Maple Leaf location on September 1st! So if you need a Squirrel fix, head on up and say hi to us in Maple Leaf.
It’s going to be an exciting weekend in Maple Leaf!
