Seattle police are investigating a fatal single-car crash near Northgate Mall.
A car apparently struck a tree around 9:30 a.m. Friday at Northeast Northgate Way and Third Avenue Northeast, killing the driver.
The gender and age of the driver were not immediately released.
Images from Air4 show the front-end of the classic car completely smashed.
Traffic was rerouted in the area, and a tow truck was brought in to remove the car after the scene was processed.

The car-pedestrian accident that’s taken up most of the afternoon.
From Seattle Police:
Detectives are investigating after a 33-year-old man was struck by a truck along Lake City Way Northeast today.
Officers were dispatched to Lake City Way NE and 18th Avenue Northeast after a caller reported a large commercial truck hit a man along Lake City Way NE just before 2:30 P.M.
Officers arrived and found the man with life-threatening head injuries lying in the road. Seattle Fire Department Medics transported the man to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.
Detectives are now speaking with witnesses and the driver, who is cooperating with investigators. Traffic collision detectives will continue to investigate this incident and make a final the determination of cause.

WSDOT 6:15 a.m.:
UPDATE: The I-5 express lanes are now open. Continue to consider alternate routes as the express lanes will get jammed up quickly.
To summarize the situation on southbound I-5 in Seattle:
1. All lanes southbound I-5 at SR 522/Lake City Way are blocked due to a collision involving a Seattle Police Department vehicle.
2. The backup as of 5:25 a.m. is about 4 miles.
3. The I-5 express lanes are in the process of being opened but there is no estimate for when they may open or when mainline lanes will open.
4. Drivers are urged to delay their trips if possible or use alternate routes, and to expect significant delays.
* 15th Avenue Northeast at Northeast 97th Street is closed because a Metro bus hit a box truck.
* An officer-involved shooting has closed Northeast 65th Street at Ravenna Avenue Northeast.
* Many morning commute buses are being re-routed and traffic is a mess.

Update: WSDOT tweets: We’re going to keep I-5 express lanes SB until 1 pm as we continue to try to recover from earlier major collision at Northgate.
As this morning’s horrendous traffic was clearing from the near-closure of Interstate 5 southbound, a female pedestrian was struck by a car at Roosevelt Way Northeast and Northeast 108th Street.
KIRO tweeted this photo. Lanes are blocked northbound. One lane of Roosevelt is blocked in either direction.
The victim has life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. and was near Northgate Mall, which is also where this morning’s collision of two trucks shut down traffic on I-5.

A 17-year-old woman was hit and killed by a pickup truck on Fifth Avenue Northeast this morning, police say.
It happened about 8:15 a.m. as she crossed at Northeast 115th Street, according to a police press release.
Seattle Fire Department Medics and Seattle Police responded to the collision. Medics determined that the 17-year-old female pedestrian died at the scene.
As is protocol, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer responded and evaluated the adult driver of the Ford. It was determined that the driver was not impaired. The driver was released from the scene pending further investigation. Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad responded and began their investigation. This remains an active and on-going investigation.

A dramatic two-car crash closed Roosevelt Way Northeast and brought news helicopters and police and fire units to Maple Leaf shortly before 10:30 this morning.
One SUV ended up in the ditch almost under this building at Roosevelt and Northeast 91st Street.
Thirteen emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene at 10:18 a.m., and another one a minute later.
No serious injuries were reported, although ambulances were at the scene. Buses on Roosevelt were rerouted to stops south of Northeast 80th Street.
A neighbor emailed to say: “Nice pedestrian almost hit, missed him by about a foot.”
