Last week’s kickoff of a new yearlong youth initiative drew 220 people to the Rainier Community Center. Could tonight’s meeting at Northgate Elementary School produce similar results?

All three co-chairs of the initiative – former Mayor Norm Rice, former Deputy Mayor Bob Watt and Estela Ortega, executive director of El Centro de la Raza – are expected to attend.

The initiative is designed to shape the city’s approach to youth and family issues. It’s aimed at eliminating racial disparities in education, child care, health and the criminal justice system.

The meeting is from 7-8:30 p.m. at the school, 11725 First Ave. N.E. Those attending will break into small groups, each with a facilitator.

If you can’t make tonight’s meeting, there are a number of other ways to get involved in helping our kids.
