The Maple Leaf Community Council, which spearheaded the fight to preserve a grove of trees at the old Waldo Hospital on 15th Avenue Northeast, is being honored by the Seattle Audubon Society.

Each year Seattle Audubon recognizes outstanding community leaders for exemplary contributions to local environmental education, conservation and science.   The Maple Leaf Community Council and the Menachem Mendel Seattle Cheder Day School will receive the Conservation Award for their work to protect Seattle’s urban forests.

The award will be presented June 17 at Audubon’s annual Appreciation and Awards dinner.

David Miller, head of the community council’s Waldo Working Group, e-mailed us to say: “Saving Waldo Woods took the dedicated effort of hundreds of community members who gave of their time and their money to make this happen. Sharing this award with MMSC is appropriate as they were willing to make their actions match their stated values and worked closely with MLCC to permanently preserve Waldo Woods.”
