Neighboring farmers markets start this week

This week kicks off farmers market season for Maple Leaf, even if we still don’t have our own designated market.

Don’t give up yet on Thornton Place, which still is pursuing adding a farmers market to its community, but in the meantime we’ve got two nearby markets opening this week: in Lake City tomorrow and in Meadowbrook on Sunday.

Expect much more than fruits, veggies, herbs and cut flowers at the Lake City Farmers Market, from 3-7 p.m. every Thursday through Oct. 7 next to the Lake City Library at Northeast 125th Street and 28th Avenue Northeast.

Even Maple Leaf will be represented with baked goods from Sugar Shack Baking Co. Other prepared foods include preserves and syrups, artisan breads and crackers, ice cream from Half Pint Homemade Ice Cream, cider and hard cider from Rockridge, artisan cheeses, nuts and nut butters, savory pies from Innocent Pie Co. and fresh pasta from La Pasta.

You’ll also find raw honey from Sweet As Can Bee Honey, eggs and pork from Sky Valley Family Farm, wild Alaskan salmon from Two If  By Sea, and for the next two weeks, Cascadian Edible Landscapes will be selling edible plant starts.

If all this talk is making you hungry, there’s lunch fare as well, including at Pan Africa’s stand, which will be serving chicken, lamb and vegetarian African dishes, or Patty Pan Grill’s quesadillas, tamales and grilled veggies.

Don’t buy too much on Thursday, though, because you’ll also want to stop by the Meadowbrook Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for its opening day festivities.

For the kids, there’ll be classes all day on how to plant a seed, as well as face painting from noon to 2 p.m. for $1-$2. Also from noon to 2 p.m., you can learn how to build a worm bin.

There also will be a free raffle to win a good basket from a vendor, as well as complimentary treats from Maria’s Desserts.

The nonprofit Meadowbrook Farmers Market, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday at the Seattle Waldorf School at 2728 N.E. 100th St., continues through Oct. 31.
