A candidate forum for the new Seattle City Council district that includes the vast majority of Maple Leaf will be held Monday evening.

The forum for Council District 5 is from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Jane Addams Middle School, 11051 34th Avenue Northeast.

It’s sponsored by the North District Council, the Lake City Neighborhood Alliance, and the Meadowbrook Community Council.

Meanwhile, a candidate for District 5 with high name recognition, Mian Rice – son of former mayor Norm Rice – on Thursday announced he’s out of the race.

Publicola has the story here. From a Rice press release:

(It) is with mixed emotions that I am today announcing my withdrawal from the Seattle City Council race for the District 5 seat.

As my campaign began to take shape, a growing issue of deep concern has been rapidly spreading across our nation – and it is an issue that I cannot continue to stand by and ignore. There is a growing disparity around racial justice issues in our community and an ever-widening economic divide that only serves to make the problem worse. In the face of the tragic events we’ve witnessed in Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD, I have come to realize that this is the issue I need to devote my time and attention to, because this is where my passion resides.

As is true for so many of those individuals I connected with at the door of their home or their store-front, I too care deeply about the direction our city is heading. That is why I have decided to follow my heart and focus my energy and attention on doing all I can to ensure that we do not become another Ferguson or Baltimore.

The full press release is also on the candidate’s Facebook page.

The official city candidate list is here.
