Earth Day may officially be a week away, but the festivities aren’t limited to April 22.
This weekend, CoolMom and the Sierra Club are kicking off Earth Week by inviting families to join the push for an end to the use of coal and a transition to clean energy in Washington by installing hundreds of pinwheels at the “pinwheel wind farm” at Green Lake Playground.
From noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, volunteers will be by the Green Lake Community Center, 7201 E. Green Lake Drive N., to help passersby create their own “mini renewable energy station.”
Want to make your pinwheel before you go? The template is here. You also can learn more about the Beyond Coal campaign at a Sierra Club meeting later that day at Maple Leaf’s Olympic View Church, 425 95th St. N.E. The town hall-style meeting starts at 7 p.m., with a reception at 6:30 p.m.
Ted Nace, author of the book “Climate Hope: On the Front Lines of the Fight Against Coal,” along with environmental scientists and clean energy experts will talk about the effects of coal, and how we can move beyond its use. Guest speakers will include Seattle City Councilman Mike O’Brien, Pastor Ken Miller Rieman and University of Washington Climate Scientist Tad Anderson.
