Pam emails: “Had someone knocking on our door early this morning with a familiar scam.
‘I locked my keys in the car, can you give me money to pay a locksmith etc.’
“Might be good to warn folks.”
This occurred in the 7500 block of Roosevelt Way Northeast.
More advice can be found in this post from last year.
I happened across this post via a link on an older article ( http://www.udistrictdaily.com/2011/01/12/door-to-door-locked-out-of-my-house-scam/ ). The story on that page fits my experience just now 100%. I live just off the Ave. past the university. A slightly-beyond-middle-aged black guy, claimed he was a janitor at the university, made a point to say he was gay, and stuck his head in the door while I was getting the three dollars he needed, which jumped up to thirteen when I gave it to him. I feel really stupid, as I should’ve known no one moved into the apartment building today, as he said he did.
I never open the door without asking what the person wants. I have had two instances, one in particular, that was quite scary (about three years ago).
Best not to open the door for anyone…it is my opinion that we don’t live in Mayberry any longer.
“You don’t need cash. Show me your car. I’ll call the police non-emergency line, they’ll send a squad car. Any officer can open a locked car.”
See what they say to that!
