We reported back in January on the Heritage Trees of Maple Leaf. Now one of them has become more famous.
Dawn emails:
We are excited to announce that our flowering cherry Prunus x yedoenisis “Akebono” has been awarded Best in Neighborhood by the Heritage Tree organization, a division of Plant Amnesty. The tree is believed to be between 80 and 100 years old.
The tree is on the corner of Northeast 90th Street and 12th Avenue Northeast. Dawn says they get so many questions about the tree that they have created a Facebook fan page, here.
Our favorite tree in Maple Leaf! We walk/run by it every morning with the dogs Lucy & McKay.
I’ve definitely noticed this tree before. It’s absolutely beautiful. I didn’t realize it was so old. Awesome!
The Facebook page says NE 90th St & 12th Ave NE.
Maple Leaf Life: That is correct, thanks.
NE 90th St and 89th Ave NE would be somewhere in the middle of Lake Washington, just west of Kirkland. Did you mean 8th ave NE?
I LOVE this tree! When I need a boost, I take a walk down there during lunch and just enjoy it. Especially love it in late summer when the sun is setting – some time between 7 and 8 at night, it is lit up just right and takes your breath away.
