“Yay to Cloud City, no to the roaster.”
That’s the verdict by Michael Smith, organizer of the Coffee Club of Seattle, on the espresso served at Cloud City Coffee, 8801 Roosevelt Way N.E, during the “coffee exploration” held at the cafe Wednesday afternoon.
Smith liked the way the barista prepared the shot, but was not a fan of the roaster, True North. On the Coffee Club’s review page, he commented:
“The barista was friendly and skilled, but the espresso was on the bland side.”

Cloud City should expect to see the coffee club back during the summer, due to the cafe’s great outdoor seating.
“We could definitely host our large Sunday meetings here in the summertime,” Smith said.

I want to like Cloud City Coffee, I really do. But I’ve had more bad coffee there than good. I’m a fatal optimist but the fact is, their coffee frequently tastes burnt. I went daily for months, and over the years, less frequently (3-4 times a week and then once a week) as I couldn’t justify wasting my money 70% of the times. (Why’d I do that? It was closer.)
I agree that Javasti and Blue Saucer make better espresso more consistently. Rooster’s on LCW does as well.
I really like Great Dog in Pinehurst the most. They serve Cafe Vita and their baristas are excellent.
Thanks for the Blue Saucer tip. I just added it to the Coffee Club list of places to try out.
Hey Andrew ~~ you’re not the only Andrew in Maple Leaf! How about adding a middle initial or something so we can both play here?
I’m a regular customer at Cloud City (most everyone there knows me by name) and I *like* their coffee. I would not want them to think I’m bashing them on line…
Isn’t it great we have options and can indulge our individual preferences?
Agreed Simon! Journalism 101…
And Andrew I’m with you – I walk by Cloud City on my way to Javasti. And don’t forget Blue Saucer – another good joint! They all have something different to offer.
Maple Leaf Life spends a lot of time being boosterish on Cloud City, it *seems* like. That may not be borne out by actual data, but it’s my impression. Nothing against Cloud City at all, which is a great establishment, but in Seattle the media must take care to offer cafe balance. 🙂
Surprising. I don’t think I’ve ever had coffee from Cloud City that didn’t taste burnt. I’ve started opting for Javasti over Cloud City every time.
