Northgate Community Center offers a twist on the Old West this weekend with a performance by children’s singer-songwriter Eric Ode.

This month’s Concerts for Kids event features the four-time Parents’ Choice Awards winner, who is sure to get kids on their feet with his upbeat, high-participation music and poetry concert.

Ode’s free performance Saturday, which begins at 11 a.m., will feature that crabby tabby Scratch, the Barn Cat, among the various props, puppets, sing-alongs and hand motions he uses to keep kids engaged.

A former elementary schoolteacher with 12 years’ experience, Ode has written the humorous cowboy poetry collection “Tall Tales of the Wild West (And a Few Short Ones),” and his music has been featured on radio programs across the country, including the PBS series “Dragonfly TV.”

The monthly Concert for Kids series, presented by the Haller Lake Arts Council and the community center, is geared toward children ages 4-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend.
