Maybe we’ll never have anything quite like the Fremont Outdoor Movies, but Maple Leaf resident Philip Borgnes hopes we can at least have one outdoor movie a year as part of the Maple Leaf Summer Social.
At last year’s annual community event, he says he gathered more than 200 signatures from neighbors who said they were in favor of including a film at the end of the social, and the Maple Leaf Community Council has been receptive to the issue from the get-go. But there’s still a lot of red tape involved that Borgnes says he’s trying to help the council muddle through.
Through the Sidewalk Cinema portion of his company, Media Bay Productions, Borgnes has been helping area communities set up outdoor movies for seven years, including in Lynnwood, Duvall, Edmonds and throughout Seattle.
“But I haven’t been able to do one in my neighborhood yet,” he says.
If his plan to add an outdoor movie at the end of the summer social pans out, Borges says he has yet to pick a movie.
“It will be a family-oriented movie,” is about all he knows now, although he’s looking for input from Reckless Video and from the community.
What movie would you like to see at the Maple Leaf Summer Social? Or are you against the idea of holding an outdoor event that late in our community?
I agree with the comment below. There are many activities that are geared toward children in the area and it would be nice to see the neighborhood place more focus on the adult urban professionals in the community. Maple Leaf has the opportunity to create a multi-faced community for all of its members. It would be wonderful for those in the neighborhood to have access to activities that would enable us to remain in the neighborhood, support our neighbors, and help our local businesses thrive, rather than spending our time, money and resources in other neighborhoods because of their more diverse offerings.
I'm excited about the idea of an outdoor movie in Maple Leaf, but I am not quite sure why we'd need a “family-oriented” movie when the movies start so late in outdoor venues. Also, community centers and elementary schools already have that covered. I'm not suggesting anything risque, but something that will get people to come. I loved the lineup at Fremont last summer, but I missed The Big Lebowski night. Maybe bring The Dude to Maple Leaf?
