This weekend’s closure of the Interstate 5 on-ramp at Northeast 80th Street has backed up traffic on northbound Fifth Avenue Northeast from at least Rick’s Chevron (at Northeast 85th) north to past Northeast 92nd.
Roosevelt Way Northeast is much better.
It is worse than this. There is a huge backup on eastbound 80th, because there is no dedicated left turn from 80th onto 5th, even though SDOT looked into this 15 years ago.
So… drivers tired of waiting in this backup, are racing up 4th Ave NE in an effort to find their own detour route.
I’ve never seen traffic on this residential streets this bad — except maybe back before we put out traffic circles in.
SDOT fails again. They should have handled the detour better, and considered having a manned traffic flagger at 80th and 5th.
