This afternoon the Seattle School District announced that all schools will remain closed Friday.
The Seattle Times has continuing coverage here.
Meanwhile, Alex emails:
The new Sacajawea Elementary School playground is in the final stages of being built, and is still in need of a number of volunteers to come help assemble the last of the equipment this Saturday (and perhaps Sunday).
Apparently, a number of teachers who were expected to give a hand have been told by the district they should remain off school grounds while the strike continues, Alex says he was told.
Here’s the original announcement:
Playground Assembly by PTA
The new playground needs to be assembled. Two work parties are scheduled, please lend a hand and let’s get this playground ready for the kids.
The build will begin at 8 AM
we need 30-40 volunteers
kids can help too
dress for the weather (Sat. 9/12 forecast sunny with high of 73)
we welcome donations of snacks or drinks if you yourself cannot work
we will be building play equipment & moving materials
we could use a few people handy with tools but no skills required
Lunch will be provided
Just to clarify, the teachers have not been “expected” to help, they volunteered to help. Administration told them that they aren’t allowed to help. The school was supposed to have the new playground last year, so we’re well overdue. It’s ridiculous that the teachers, in a non-teaching volunteer capacity, aren’t allowed to help.
MLL: Thanks.
