Sacajawea Elementary School has a lot to celebrate, and plans to do so this weekend.
A celebration parade starts this Saturday at 2 p.m at the Maple Leaf school. It will be followed by an art festival beginning at 3 p.m. at the school, 9501 20th Avenue N.E.
In between there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a completely new playground. The school explains:
More than 130 volunteers and donors have contributed more than 1,300 hours (not including planning and fundraising) to renovate a lower playground that previously was little more than asphalt and a few dilapidated garden beds. The new design includes a stage for outdoor theater and classes, new raised garden beds, and a playscape over wood chips, for softer landings.
“We were lucky to have so many generous donors and a core group of skilled volunteers who were willing to spend every weekend for the past five months working on this playground,” says Tracy Patton, PTA co-chair. “Those who weren’t working on the playground were contributing in other ways, like providing food and drinks for the volunteers, tracking costs, and helping to raise money for the project.”
The parade, dedication and festival are open to the public.
