UPDATE: Seattle Public Utilities has posted an update, below. And the department’s Jason Argo says there won’t be any more kits available later this month or next. Also, in the compost department, Maple Leaf Ace Hardware is offering 20 percent off Cedar Grove compost in the spirit of Compost Days.

Kitchen kit giveaway ends

Due to unprecedented popular demand, supplies of the free green kitchen kits offered by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) were exhausted this morning.

SPU distributed 1,000 kitchen collection kits in the first two hours of the giveaway. There will be no additional supplies of kits.

SPU customers can still take advantage of the “Compost Days” compost giveaway and pick up two free bags of compost with the coupon that appeared in the spring edition of the utility’s CurbWaste & Conserve newsletter.

For more details, visit www.CGCompost.com or call 1-877-SOILS-4U.

SPU apologizes for any inconvenience caused to its customers.

The free “green kitchen kits” offered starting today by Seattle Public Utilities all were taken by late morning, workers said. Free compost was still available.

The Neighborhood Service Center in the University District had already given away all 60 of its kits, which include compostable bags for storing food scraps, a food scraper, a compact fluorescent light bulb and a reusable shopping bag, by 11 a.m. They still had light bulbs as consolation prizes.

Another location said all the kitchen kits throughout the city were given away before noon. We’re checking on that.

Cars were lining up to pick up bags of free Cedar Grove compost at 7400 Sand Point Way. “Compost Days” runs through May 30.

  1. For something as highly promoted in a town like Seattle, I really can't believe they only stocked 1,000 kits. Granted, it's a give away, and it hopefully achieved the goal of raising awareness (as though Seattle-ites aren't already overly green), but you have to wonder what the ratio of coupons to kits was?
