The final head count for Monday night’s Youth and Families Initiative meeting for the north end exceeds 260. And not a person lacked opinions, judging from the city’s report on the gathering.
Mayor Mike McGinn and former Mayor Norm Rice were among the speakers at Northgate Elementary School, which hosted the standing-room only event. But they were asking the crowd for advice – and they got it.
The city lists well over 100 responses to these questions: “From your perspective, what are the most critical challenges, issues or problems that must be addressed” to help children and families succeed?
There are far too many to list, but a sampling includes:
- Education – improve dropout rates, improve test scores, improve quality of teachers, reduce class size. Equality for all schools.
- Eliminate family violence. Safety at home and in school.
- More early intervention.
You can read the full list here. Or, for the list from a previous meeting attended by about 200 people, go here. There’s also a place to comment online.
What do you think our kids’ need to succeed?
