As 2011 kicks off, so does the annual Maple Leaf Community Council membership drive, an effort to increase community support and involvement in the neighborhood. The request that arrived last week in many Maple Leaf mailboxes explains:
The Maple Leaf Community Council works to maintain and improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and to provide information to neighborhood residents through a variety of activities. …
Strong neighborhoods rely on the support and involvement of residents who live there. We hope that you will help strengthen this neighborhood by supporting the Maple Leaf Community Council.
Events listed include the Maple Leaf Summer Social, the Maple Leaf Community Garden and four community meetings, the next of which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Olympic View Elementary, 504 N.E. 95th St. The apparent uptick in crime as of late is on the agenda, and there also will be an update on the Maple Leaf Reservoir Park as well as time for any other issues important to the Maple Leaf community.
Membership costs $15 for a household, $5 for a senior, $30 for a benefactor, $60 for a patron and $50 for a business. In addition to sending in a check, you also can pay with a credit card via the Community Council’s website.
At last month’s executive board meeting, members discussed cutting back costs on the annual mailing, which now includes the membership form and a more in-depth description of the Maple Leaf Community Council, as well as an envelope addressed to the council. In the future, the council may just send a postcard requesting membership, which would both cut back on the cost of the mailing and perhaps encourage more members to take advantage of the online payment option.
Do you have a preference about how the Community Council should request new members/renewals? Why or why not do you plan to join this year?
