Road rage: Taser vs. bike on Northgate

October 24th, 2010 by Mike

A bicyclist was threatened with a Taser by a motorist, who also attempted to run over the bicyclist with his van, according to police dispatched to a report of “road rage.”

The incident occurred on Northeast Northgate Way last Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 9:22 p.m., according to a police report which states the cyclist was riding westbound and signaled he was stopping for the light at Roosevelt Way Northeast as the van followed closely behind.

Word were exchanged, according to the police report. “The driver of the vehicle then pulled a taser out and attempted to reach over the passenger seat to tase (victim).”

When the cyclist backed away, the driver tried to hit him with the van, a witness told police. “Fearing for his life (the victim) jumped off his bike and ran to the sidewalk. The van came to a stop only after hitting the curb,” according to the report. “The vehicle then fled the area.”

The driver was described as a balding white man in his 50s. Police believe they know him and his van, and say the man is known to carry a Taser.

Jack Cellars celebrates 'Last Syrah,' sale continues

October 23rd, 2010 by master

Jack Cellars, 8016 15th Ave. N.E., is closing its doors this weekend, but wine enthusiasts got the chance to bid a fond farewell on Friday night, also known as “The Last Syrah.”

Owner Jack Ewer estimated that hundreds would show up for the three-year-old store’s last wine tasting event, and by 6 p.m. attendance seemed sure to reach that figure.

And the festivities will continue through the weekend, with a liquidation from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The store’s racks, fridges, antique tasting bar, furniture, computers and more will be sold, although a number of the items already had “Sold” signs on them on Friday.

Elthea’s going-away party is this afternoon at Cloud City Coffee

October 22nd, 2010 by Mike

Here’s a reminder: Elthea Farr, the former co-owner of Maple Leaf’s Cloud City Coffee, will be hosted and perhaps roasted at the restaurant from 4-7 p.m. today.

Elthea is returning to Hawaii to raise her family (and perhaps enjoy the sun).

Please stop by next Friday, October 22 to say goodbye to Elthea. She’s headed to Maui for the winter and will be back to have another baby in the spring. You’ll probably see her around Cloud City, but not working. Come wish her well, have some snacks (light food and a cake) and tell her what she meant to you. We will have a guest book out for you to sign.

Also bones, ghouls, ghosts and witches. (No sign of Lady Gaga. Yet.)

And remember the Howl-O-Ween contest from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at All The Best Pet Care, 8050 Lake City Way N.E.

Plus, on Halloween itself, neighbors are putting on the second annual Maple Leaf Parade of Costumes from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, centered around the traffic circle at 12th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 91st Street.

Don’t take good photos? If you see a Halloween display that really raises the hair on your neck, send us the address and we’ll check it out: [email protected]
