From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Green Seattle Partnership and EarthCorps are hoping you’ll help them restore the forest around Thornton Creek. Volunteers will assist in removing invasive plants, planting maintenance and mulching at the Thornton Creek Forest Restoration Event.
Attendees are asked to meet at Northeast 106th Street and Eighth Avenue Northeast, at Thornton Creek Park No. 6. For more information and to sign up, go to earthcorps.org.
Weeding is also the deed of the day at the Maple Leaf Community Garden, explains Barbara Maxwell, who leads the community garden committee for the Maple Leaf Community Council:
So, the upcoming work party on Saturday, September 18th from 9:30 am to Noon is intended to be a major Fall effort to weed-for example, pull morning glory out of the plants along the southern property line. It’s not hard work, just fussy as you have to sort of untwine it. Other areas of work will be cutting plants back, weeding pathways, and maybe planting some additional native ground covers. We also included a “swale” area along the street edge (a former drainage ditch) that is in dire need of a tune up. We put in some logs to create weirs to slow the storm water runoff but the storm water has delivered lots of weed seeds and debris. It’s really a chore to keep up with.
She adds that they’ll provide gloves, tools and refreshments for the volunteers. The garden is located at 529 N.E. 103rd St.
