Among the 40 or so tables at next Wednesday’s Maple Leaf Summer Social will be one or two new features – donation bins for North Helpline Food Bank.
The food bank, which serves Maple Leaf and northeast Seattle, is faced with a 37 percent increase in the number of households seeking help this year.
The food bank and its partners are asking local residents to help fill the brightly decorated food collection barrels. Besides the ones at the Summer Social, there are bins at Cloud City Coffee, Café Javasti and Blue Saucer Coffee in Maple Leaf.
North Helpline, which began in 1989, provides food and other basic essentials to more than 700 households a week. The food bank attributes this year’s 37 increase in families who need help to the continued downtown in the economy.
For more information call Lynda at North Helpline, 206-367-3477, or visit www.northhelpline.org. For liability reasons the food bank can’t accept food past the expiration date.
