There will be a heckuva lot more than ice cream at next week’s annual Maple Leaf Summer Social from 7-11 p.m. July 28.
For the first time, the neighborhood’s biggest event is topping off the evening of festivities with an outdoor movie after the sun goes down.
But it all begins at 7 p.m. at Maple Leaf Playground, 1020 N.E. 82nd St., with at least 40 tables featuring local businesses, government agencies, local artists and plenty more, including a visit from a Seattle Fire truck.
Kids’ activities include a face painter and a clown who also is a balloon artist, and we’ll have live music by the marimba band Tumbuka, which plays African music drawn from traditional and contemporary styles.
Maple Leaf Life is sponsoring the band this year. The ice cream bars are sponsored by Maple Leaf Ace Hardware, the clown by neighborhood resident Dawn Porter and the balloons by residents Cathy and Richard Boyce. Face painting is sponsored by the Maple Leaf Community Council.
When the sky turns dark around 9 p.m., we’ll light up the park with the movie “Outsourced,” a romantic comedy created locally that won best film at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival.
