Support a neighbor by visiting Seattle Subsonic

Visiting area stores and restaurants seems like the most obvious way to support local businesses, but you also can do a lot of good for Maple Leaf residents by just pointing and clicking from the comfort of your computer desk.

And on the website Seattle Subsonic, created two years ago by Maple Leaf resident Kevin leDoux, you don’t even have to buy anything to support a neighbor. Instead, he offers you free recommendations on the local music scene and upcoming concerts with the help of a team of writers.

“I began with small group of writers, and once we started getting content up about local music, the site began to grow almost immediately,” leDoux tells me. “We are getting requests from bigger and bigger bands and promoters all the time, but what we’re really concerned with are the little guys in Seattle and the Northwest in general.”

And it’s certainly a labor of love. With no ads on the site, it actually costs him money to run it and nobody is paid for their efforts – in cash, at least. They do, however, get a few perks, such as free concert tickets and prereleased CDs.

”But mostly we do it because we simply love music and love being part of the local music scene,” leDoux says.

And if he just defined you in that statement, you can do more than just point and click to support Seattle Subsonic. The website also appreciates any tips its readers can share about the local music scene, and leDoux says he’s also always on the lookout for new writers with a passion for new and local music.

You can listen to an interview of leDoux with Bellevue College’s KBCS.

Meanwhile, we’re on the lookout for more websites owned and operated by Maple Leaf residents, so let us know at [email protected] what online projects you’re pursuing that your neighbors might be interested in.
