More than a dozen vendors crowded into the Northgate Community Center this morning as waves of shoppers searched for forgotten treasures at the annual Northgate Flea Market.
You have until 3 p.m. to hunt through your typical flea market fare, including antique vases, homemade scarves, gently used clothing and baby necessities, as well as the other odds and ends: a few Pokemon card collections, office supplies and even a handful of “slightly used” Entertainment books for $2 each.
Franny Zanides also was selling new jewelry – but at flea market prices. Normally she sells the Cookie Lee line of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even children’s jewelry at private parties throughout the area, but she was hoping to sell some of her leftovers at the flea market.
“They’re just items we’re trying to move through,” she said.
Meanwhile, Seattle artist Victoria Reeves doubled your treasure by selling art she created from recycled materials.
But the Meadowbrook resident doesn’t just create her “Funky Mama Dolls,” she also teaches children the value of recycling as well as the joy of art through classes at the Northgate Community Center.
“It’s pretty interesting,” Reeves said. “The kids love it. And the parents love it because they’re actually learning something.”
Her upcoming classes at the center include a Found Art Sculpture Workshop for ages 7-18, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 20, for $25; Recycled Art Class (Your Trash is Treasure) for ages 6-10, from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays from April 8 to May 6, for $49; African Mask-Making Workshop for ages 7-18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 17, for $30; and a Funky Doll-Making Workshop for ages 7-18, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 15, for $32.
You can register for these and other classes at the Seattle Parks and Recreation Web site. For more information about Reeves’ classes, contact her at 617-9180 or RecycleArtSeattle@yahoo.com.
