Just shy of a dozen volunteers turned out this morning, including two EarthCorps workers, to mulch and plant at the quarterly Maple Leaf Community Garden work party.
The garden features 22 P-Patch garden plots and open space for the community, including a meditative labyrinth at its peak and “Native Land,” which is planted with native shrubs that are a haven for birds as well as bird watchers.
Site coordinator Jennifer Zanella first got involved with the project in 2006, when construction on the tool shed started.
“When they said they were building a straw-bale tool shed, I just had to get involved,” Zanella said. “Once I got involved, I just loved the work and to participate in such a great project. And it just gets better every year.”
Besides the mulching, Zanella said another one of the day’s goals was to redesign the garden area that the “whirligig” wind sculpture is in so that it can be more easily maintained.
