UPDATE: Donna Hartmann-Miller, of the community council, just contacted us to say there will be free child care at the meeting. See her post under “comments.”

Maple Leaf’s Reservoir Park is about to quadruple in size, giving the community 21 acres of prime park land with a sweeping view of Seattle.

What should that new park look like? Should it have more playgrounds or more ball fields? An amphitheater or walking trails? How about a P-Patch or off-leash dog run? Should it primarily serve the neighborhood, or become a regional attraction?

Tuesday’s meeting is to help figure that out. It’s from 6-8 p.m. at Olympic View Elementary, 504 N.E. 95th St.

The city is rebuilding the reservoir, as everyone who drives down Roosevelt Way can easily see. When it’s finished in a few years, the water will be covered with a concrete cap and two feet of sod, adding 15 acres to the existing 5.5-acre park. The Maple Leaf Community Council has been extensively involved in the process. Tentative designs are posted in the display window at 8521 Roosevelt Way, and  much more information including sketches of possible designs can be found on the council’s Web site here.

If you can’t make the meeting, you can still comment. E-mail the city’s project planner, Kellee Jones, at kellee.jones@seattle.gov

An official announcement of the meeting is here.

  1. Also, Maple Leaf Community Council/Friends for a Greater Maple Leaf Park is sponsoring free on-site, licensed, professional childcare services in order to encourage adult participation at this important planning meeting. Please pass the word, it didn't make it on the official website. Even if you participated in the community-driven workshops that Friends for a Greater Maple Leaf Park hosted, and even if you have already provided comments on those concepts, please take the time to join in this important intial meeting. Maybe your opinion on park amenities has been strengthened or maybe you have improved upon the ideas discussed. The Parks Dept and The Berger Partnership — our landscape architects — want to hear directly from you about what is important for you to see in our park.I'm looking forward to this meeting and hope to see lots of Leafers there!
