Maple Leaf residents most unhappy at bus route changes

King County Councilman Bob Ferguson

Neighbors are quite displeased with changes to bus routes from Maple Leaf to downtown, and let the city and Metro know about it Wednesday night.

“I’ve received more e-mail on these particular route changes than on any other transportation issue in my time on the King County Council,” Councilman Bob Ferguson told the April general meeting of the Maple Leaf Community Council. “I plan to sit down tomorrow with Metro officials to see if there are other solutions.”

In fact, by the end of the meeting representatives from Metro and the city’s Department of Transportation were huddled outside around a table, discussing the problem.

The bus routes changed in part because the impending closure of the 15th Avenue bridge has thrown all the buses that used to run on 15th Avenue Northeast onto Roosevelt Way Northeast. And that, in turn, has changed the route between downtown and Maple Leaf and increased the commute time home by about 50 percent. Residents are unhappy about that, and unhappy that many of the buses now run through downtown’s transit tunnel, and especially unhappy that they don’t believe anybody from Metro is listening.

Any comments on the bus routes from here to downtown and back?
