Masked bandit sighting reported in Maple Leaf

John sends these images and thoughts: “5:00 a.m. Sat. 10/17 I accosted four masked prowlers apparently planning to steal something from my neighbors’ yard (grapes, I think). I’ve seen them before — a local gang. I don’t think they’re violent or dangerous — unless maybe you’re a chicken.”

  1. Our 45 pound dog suffered some pretty serious wounds from a tussle with a ‘coon. My neighbor’s dog died from it’s encounter with a raccoon.

They are pretty cute little buggers. Not possums, not cute at all. I would likely swerve to miss a raccoon or a squirrel, and not a rat or an o’possum.

The new bike lanes on Pinehurst Way, approaching Northgate Way/Roosevelt are making the right hand land a right turn only onto Northgate Way. I think it might actually help traffic keep moving?

  2. I have heard that a single raccoon can take out a single coon hound — why coon hounds hunt in packs. They are definitely a threat to small pets (I put my 25lb. corgi into that category).
I don’t know about here, but in some places they do vector rabies and Leptospirosis (th elatter vie urine).

  3. Same thing happened in our backyard with our puppy. 8 mos old out going potty at 9:30pm when he was cornered by 3 raccoons and attacked him. Sutures to close the wounds and these guys weren’t scared of my husband who fended then off.

  4. Correct – non-violent unless you are a chicken or a small pet! We caught one of these trying to attack our 8-lb. dog in our fenced backyard. Luckily we were out there with him and able to scare them off but they were definitely locked in a tousle and the raccoon got his mouth on our little guy. If you are a pet owner, do not let your pet in the backyard unattended at night!
