Tuesday Feb. 25: The Seattle Times has an update here.

We’re reprinting this from PhinnyWood at the suggestion of one of our readers, who says:

My family and I occasionally shop here, and across the street at Top Ten Toys. Definitely makes you think twice about where to shop, if it truly is a random robbery.

Update 2:10 p.m.: Seattle Police say they are looking for three suspects in last night’s shooting death of a man in a parking lot near the Greenwood Fred Meyer and Bartell Drugs, just north of North 85th Street and First Avenue Northwest.

According SPD, the suspects may have been committing robberies in the area before the shooting.

Here’s the updated SPD Blotter post:

A man was found shot to death in a North Seattle parking lot last night. On 2/23/14, just shortly before 9:00 p.m., 9-1-1 received calls of shots fired in the area of N. 85th and 1st NW.

When officers arrived on scene they found an adult male victim seated in his car in a parking lot, with a single gunshot wound to his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Seattle Fire. The suspects were seen running away from the area. Detectives believe robbery was the motive in this shooting.

The suspects are described as (1) black male, 20-30 years old, 5-foot-10 tall, thin build, wearing a North Face jacket. (2) Black male, short. (3) White female.

Detectives would like to talk to anyone who may come in contact with these suspects. Investigators believe the suspects may have been committing robberies in the area prior to the shooting incident.

Anyone with information about this incident or the suspects’ whereabouts, is asked to call the Seattle Police tip line at 233-5000. Anonymous tips are welcome.

Also, The Seattle Times has identified the victim as 54-year-old David L. Peterson.

Update 6:55 a.m.: Seattle Police Detective Renee Witt told me this morning that the shooting happened in the Fred Meyer parking lot. She is expecting updated information from homicide detectives later today, and we’ll post that as soon as we get it.

  1. I dont think one of my kids would kill a man just for the heck of it. He was just about to turn his life around i bet too. Lucky fo rhim he likely wont get much time. if Mr Peterson had his concealed carry he might be alive today.

  2. The kid came from a two parent home and had been a good scholar at Ballard up until about 4 months ago. He could have been Obama’s kid. He could have been my kid.

  3. That is a tragedy for two families, (the family of the decesed man, and the family of the young man that killed him). That young man just threw his life away.

  4. So sad, I saw the wife on the news last night – sweet couple.

Being found in the car quandary – I thought maybe he would drive somewhere, then walk from there. Otherwise, I dunno.

Webmaster – is there a way to block Tim’s comments? He has become rather abusive.

Editor: Actually we did delete one comment on this thread – not from Tim but aimed at him.
Here’s what we wrote the first time we spiked a comment, in May 2010:
We are extraordinarily happy to see such a response to a developing neighborhood concern. We especially appreciate comments that are insightful, make good arguments or add to the discussion. If they are wry and witty, so much the better. If they resort to name calling, they are boring. And we’ll delete them.

  5. From KIRO: “Witnesses say before the deadly shooting and robbery, the suspects stole from the Baranof Restaurant a block away. The trio sat at the counter and stole the waitresses’ bank bag of cash.”

They took the victim’s cell phone. Any use of the phone by the perps may lead to their capture. They did not steal the car. If they were on foot, why not? They ran from the Baranof a block away. Leads me to believe local residents, on foot.

Baranof counter/glass will have fingerprints of at least one of these people.

I think the Police will nail them, and soon.

  6. Fred Meyer’s what? There’s a noun missing after the possessive.

I have relatives that work for Boeing and they hate it when people add an s to the name.

  7. Fred G. Meyer owned those stores, they were Fred Meyer’s. Mr. Boeing owned Boeing, I have heard locals call it Boeing’s all my life. I remember the old Nordstrom Best Shoes, I am aware the Nordstrom family owns the company and I have called it Nordstrom’s always. If there is an eponymous company, the possessive seems acceptable enough.

I believe the police will be arresting the killers soon, my condolences to friends and family of the victim.

  8. A bit of conflicting news there. One thing I read said he was out for his nightly walk so I can’t see how he was found in his car. In any case, hope they find the bad guys soon.

  9. I would imagine that Tim is a troll w nothing better to do w his life than to stir up the board. Oh, wait I must be a troll as well.

  10. That is bold to do in such a busy place. I would imagine that Fred Meyer’s has some cameras that may help better identify the suspects.
