Update 5 p.m.Rainfall during daylight hours: .70 inches. Top wind: 43 mph at 1:32 p.m.

Update 12:08 p.m. Thunderstorm, No power 8th Avenue Northeast to Lake Washington between Northeast 77th and Northeast 38th streets.

Update 11:55 a.m. Rain falling in sheets. More than 6,000 without power.

Update 11:30 a.m. This just in from Seattle City Light:

Gusty conditions continue and so does the risk of more outages. Getting reports from Ravenna right now. 5400 customers, report of wires down. Please call 684-3000 or 684-7400.

Rain overnight – .71 inches here at Maple Leaf Life South in the last 24 hours – means six of the nine settling ponds on the east side of Reservoir Park are full or filling.

And spilling over into miniature waterfalls.

Which should continue through the day. The forecast, as of 10 a.m., is for rain and possibly a thunderstorm, with wind gusts to 39 mph.

In the mountains – a different story. A winter storm watch from 2 p.m. today until noon Sunday. From Cliff Mass:

The weather map at 1 p.m. Saturday shows the story: LOTS of isobars over the region. Expect blizzard conditions in the passes. If you (travel) into the mountains that day, prepare for difficult conditions (chains, food, blankets). I would expect some avalanche control closures as well.

  1. Sue, for future power outages, Cooper’s on Lake City Way usually still has power when it’s out in the ‘hood and it’s a great place to watch football games, drink beers, and get lunch in our hood.

  2. An Observer –

Please attend the Maple Leaf Community Meeting on Wednesday, January 29th at Olympic View Elementary, 7 to 9pm. We will be discussing neighborhood issues and finding out the concerns of the neighborhood, helping us to establish our next set of goals.

We need to have conversations about items like this on the list so as we hear of opportunities for funding for issues like this, we can get it submitted for consideration. It often takes years to get projects done, but nothing will happen if they aren’t on our radar. I hope you (and anyone else reading this) will be able to attend and provide some more details.

    Thanks,
    Donna Hartmann-Miller

  3. We could use some of these structures in NE Maple Leaf, the NE 106th street right of way west of 9th NE and east of Thornton Creek is already owned by the DOT/City of Seattle and would be a good location, just leave access to the neighbors side yard with a 10 foot wide gravel driveway. The property on the other side of the right of way is Seattle Parks property.

Every gully washer moves a lot of water down the hill at very high velocity in the areas north of NE 92nd that have no curbs and spotty storm drains. These weirs work to slow the water, and trap sediment and oil. Nice to see the ones at the top of the hill work, but down here we really need some help.

  4. Sue, any local bar with power will always have the game going! My local bar had a leak in the ceiling due to rain, and I put on my raincoat/hood and sat right under it. First row seat. Great game!!!!

  5. Great photos Mike. Thanks so much. Did you happen to see how the rain gardens around the edge were draining? I meant to make it up there, but didn’t have time.

    1. Editor: The garden immediately by Waldo – which is also fed by a drainage tube – was quite full. The others, to the west and north, were mostly dry.

  6. Best weather updates are coming from Seahawk game coverage. So sad for power outage people. Any recommendations where they can go to see the game?

  7. These pictures are crazy!

We went there last night just before the park closed, specifically to see these settling ponds, and they were all completely empty! That water all disappeared in one day, apparently! And it was raining fairly hard, but there was a tiny, tiny trickle coming out of the pipe at the top.

We were surprised then, and I’m more surprised now.

It’s really cool to see them full with waterfalls.

There can’t be some kind of valve so that only daytimers get to enjoy it?
