Another neighbor reports a home burglary – one of two dozen since our last roundup – updated

Update Nov. 25:

Overnight we received an email from a neighbor who lives near Northeast 91st Street and 15th Avenue Northeast, saying her home was broken into on Nov. 4.

They used a rock to shatter the back door and made a mess of our house. The police arrived in 20 minutes, and we filed a police report. We also informed several neighbors. I am sorry to hear about the other nearby robberies. Maybe we should exchange security tips. Is it possible that the same thieves are behind all this?

————————————————

We get too many emails that go like this one:

“Wanted to report a burglary. It happened shortly before noon today (Friday). The perps broke our basement door and climbed through. We’re at 8th Avenue Northeast  Northeast and Northeast 97th Street.”

The previous burglary email came in earlier this month, from Northeast 102nd Street. At the time we noted we hadn’t rounded up burglaries since September.

The map at right shows burglaries since Sept. 9th. There are right at two dozen in the Maple Leaf area.

  1. So, I guess the lesson here is that; if you catch someone trying to steal your car, or car stereo, or something, shoot them, then drag their body into your house. (kidding. don`t want to offend the ultra left).

  2. I’m more concerned with someone coming home and not knowing the burglars are there and the homeowner being hurt in the procession.

Concealed carry means you take it with you and not leave it in a drawer somewhere.

The apt dweller that shot the burglar didn’t know that mosin nagants are sighted high so you can aim for the torso at 300 yards and still hit it. It shoots high. If he felt threatened he had the right. Better 6 months in jail than dead in my opinion but we all know about opinions.

Get to know your neighbors. Talk to your neighbors and be familiar with the block at least. Our block has the greatest majority talking to each other regularly and helping each other out with simple things. Like a community. Stuff still happens but there’s a good bit averted.

Every time anyone sees the dope peddling youngsters pulling stuff from their underwear they call the cops. Who wants dope smoking drivers who need money for a junk fix in the neighborhood? Meth is a heck of a drug.

  3. My house was one of the break ins this year. We have a large, loud, barky dog, there was a car in the driveway, and someone was AT HOME IN THE SHOWER. This burgling team is fast and knows how to distract a dog with treats. I only hope they don’t come back again, and I am greatfull my dog and spouse were not harmed.

  4. Two cars were stolen from the block of 97th Ave NE (between 8th Ave NE and Roosevelt) on the same night.

Others have had property stolen from their yards.

    Something needs to change.

  5. I have a gun in my house for protection, but let’s be realistic here, these types of break ins very very rarely happen when you are home. Our house was broken into when we were at work a few years ago. They knock on your door, look for no car in the driveway, look for no signs of people, then kick in a back door or side window. They don’t want a confrontation, they want to grab your stuff and go. The best things you can do are proactive stuff like alarm systems, a dog that barks at a knock, a visible camera (even a fake one), leave a light or stereo on, etc. to make your house uninviting to a would be thief. They don’t want a confrontation or to break into a house with someone in it, so what you want to do is prep your house to prevent a break in when you aren’t there.

  6. I definitely want to get security cameras and motion-activated floodlights. While it may not have been legal to shoot the stereo thief, I think we’re all better off without him.

  7. I agree with many of the comments. Using deadly force is absolutely a last resort and never an option if someone is retreating.

Also, sorry about my messed up post (comment 8). It was from a phone and I obviously fat fingered it.

  8. My point is; that if some kid breaks into your house, you hear him, flip on the light and find him crying, cowering in a corner, you can`t shoot him. You have to fear for your own life, or the lives of your family.I don`t want to shoot anyone, but if it is me or them, well, the decision has already been made for me.

  9. You would have to shoot an intruder in your home to make it self defense. And you would have to fear for your personal safety to make it legal. As much as I may have wanted to shoot that criminal stealing the stereo out of the car, there are consequences. The thing being that the law recognizes the value of saving your own hide, but not shooting someone to save your car stereo. Not sure I agree with that, but there it is.

  10. I appreciate your storing your weapons so that a burglar can’t get at them.

I am not anti gun, but do think just leaving them in an unlocked drawer is short sighted.

You can defend yourself in your home, but if the threat is retreating, think twice prior to pulling the trigger.

The only thing you should say to the police if you are in this situation: “I believed my life was in danger and took appropriate action. I would like to speak with an attorney prior to saying anything further”.

  11. In September of 2008, a tenant living in an apartment building on the northeast corner of NE 97th Street and 5th Avenue NE, looked out from the deck of his apartment, and saw several young males trying to steal the audio equipment from his truck; so he got his rifle and pointed it at them. They ran, reportedly with some of the equipment. One of them reportedly reached down to get something from pants or a jacket.

The truck owner with the rifle, thinking that the thief was grabbing for a pistol, fired his rifle; and killed him. The police came, as did a multitude of reporters. I was sitting at the window of an apartment, a block north of where the shooting took place and was able to get an early report, by holding an umbrella over the head of the crime reporter for the Seattle P-I, when a representative from the Seattle Police Department made an initial statement; full information came later.

While the young man – age 19 at the time – who shot one of the “alleged” (as attorney say) thieves, had no prior, while he wasn’t taken into custody initially, later he was. Moreover, he stood trial for manslaughter charges and received six months of jail time.

It’s no certainty, given that many people living in Maple Leaf probably don’t remember that incident, but it’s possible that burglars, as professionals who try to know the circumstances under which they’ll be working, have heard about that incident; passed down from those who have been casing and working this neighborhood for years.

If that’s the case, it may be the reason that there’s been more burglaries this year, and over the time since. They also probably know that most people in this neighborhood don’t feel comfortable with firearms; and even if they do, a judge will make put the burden of proof on the homeowner or vehicle owner. Call it open season on law abiding citizens.

Note: I am not a member of the NRA. But I do live in a building where a car was stolen from the car port, a few years ago, and several burglaries have taken place, since February of 2012.

  12. @Ray: I am one of the Maple Leaf residents you speak of that would great an intruder armed. I am not some crazy gun toteing person but I do know how well a 12 gauge pump can protect my home.

  13. This kinda stuff was and still does happen where I live,In the past few months I have secured my home with the Gibraltdoor , it is burglar proof, I even put one on my master bedroom closet and created a walk in safe /panic room to run too! http://www.gibraltdoor.com for solid peace of mind, like a rock.

  14. No one has any descriptions?

Hopefully they are not armed and don’t end up hurting anyone. There are more than 400,000 concealed carry permits issued in Washington state. How many are in maple leaf? Sooner or later the robbers are going to find someone home who is armed.
