Waving for donations. On behalf of the Maple Leaf Community Council, member Donna Hartmann-Miller works the morning commute for GiveBIG contributions.

Today is GiveBIG day, the day to donate to your favorite nonprofit charities, and have your dollars “stretched” by The Seattle Foundation.

Grow your gift! All credit card donations* made through The Seattle Foundation’s website TODAY, May 15 between midnight and midnight (Pacific Time) will be stretched thanks to $850,000 in support for GiveBIG from The Seattle Foundation and GiveBIG sponsors.

* We will “stretch” all donations up to $25,000 per donor, per organization.

To donate, go here. Or act on any of the many emails you’ve probably received this week from nonprofits.

  1. Just to let people know more about why we were out there today, the Maple Leaf Community Council is combining our membership drive with The Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG so we can take advantage matching funds available. The match varies from year to year, but we’re hoping for a 20-25% match in 2013.

Why are we asking for your financial support? While nearly everything we do can be accomplished by the work of dedicated volunteers, we do need operating funds. Printing of our quarterly newsletter, room rental and childcare at our community meetings, and the Summer Ice Cream Social rentals are the more obvious examples. But there are some less obvious needs for funds.

The City of Seattle makes funds available to neighborhoods via matching grants. We used MLCC funds to as a partial match for The “Welcome to Maple Leaf” signs. We’re currently applying for matching grants to bring a radar speed sign to Roosevelt Way NE like the one that has slowed traffic on 15th Ave NE. We’re starting the grant process for a Maple Leaf Transportation Plan to help solve some of our neighborhood’s nagging transportation problems. We have maintenance responsibilities at our Community Garden on 103rd and will soon have them for our fabulous new park at the reservoir. And yes, we occasionally need legal advice in the rare situations where we challenge a land use action with the potential to harm the quality of life in Maple Leaf.

Please take a moment today and donate to the Maple Leaf Community Council. Any donation of $15 or more automatically comes with membership. And David, Sylvia, and I all say thanks for the waves, thumbs up, and rolled down windows with kind words shouted out.
