Streets full of fire trucks, smoke in the air – it’s a drill

This was the scene at Fifth Avenue Northeast and Northeast 81st 79th Street Tuesday afternoon as firefighters conducted a practice burn for training purposes.

You could tell it wasn’t for real by the tents set up in the front yard.

  1. Thanks Mike! I love your blog. We live on 79th and were notified by the fire department previous to the burning. It’s a large lot with a very small house on it. Assuming they’ll build something larger there. Saw them excavating today.

  2. Disappointing there is not more info available on how they got the house to use for the exercise and why people in the neighborhood were not notified of this. Too many questions left unanswered. Not to mention the health hazard and the problems smoke in the air combined with water causes to properties nearby. I find this all very odd and alarming that it can just be done without question.

  3. Does anyone know what is happening with that house now that the fire drill is over? Knock down and build new?

    1. Yes, I noticed that myself about an hour ago when I drove by again. It’s still going on; fire department’s getting a lot of use out of that house.
Apparently yesterday I wound up parking on 81st to get near it. Corrected now. Thanks. -Mike
