"Images of China" opens at NW Puppet Center

Starting tomorrow, Dragon Arts Studio is bringing a two-weekend run of “Images of China” to Maple Leaf’s Northwest Puppet Center, 9123 15th Ave. N.E.

“Images of China” is a a collection of vignettes drawing from Chinese culture and literature, including “Crane and Turtle,” shown above, which is a traditional puppet act inspired by a classical poem.

Another act is “The Donkey’s Best Friend,” shown above, which is about a girl and her father and the different ways each deals with their stubborn animal.

“The Old Man & the Monkeys,” shown at right, is another vignette featuring a merchant’s humorous encounter on the way to the market.

Showtimes are at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from Jan. 19-27. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at Brown Paper Tickets and cost $10.50 for adults; $9 for seniors; and $8.50 for children ages 1-16

Dragon Arts Studio was established in 1996 by Xu Zhengli and Wang Yuqin, who were originally with the National Puppet Theater of Beijing. The troupe has performed around the world and has been recognized with the National Heritage Award, the highest honor bestowed on artists. They have performed at The Olympics, The Kennedy Center and The 2012 International Puppetry Congress.
