Planter boxes stolen from front yard fence in Maple Leaf – is this a new low?

Update: Maybe I should have titled this, “what’s the stupidest thing you’ve had stolen from your house?

We report on neighborhood crime with some regularity … but this is ridiculous.

Some one overnight unscrewed and stole two hanging planter boxes from a tidy front-yard fence on 12th Avenue Northeast.

The home there also houses Seattle Creative Kids Preschool, at 9221 12th Ave. N.E. You can just see the school in the right of this photo, taken when Seattle firefighters paid a day visit to the school last October.

“All that is left is the screws that were used to hold the baskets.   I believe they were taken last night,” Sheila emails us from the school. “I’m so bummed they took my good Huecheras.”

Petty crime is not unknown in Maple Leaf. Cars are routinely plundered here, and as proprietors of the Dog Oasis, also on 12th Avenue Northeast, we have had several of our dog bowls stolen from the corner.

Shouldn’t thieves have more pride than to steal wooden planters and canine water bowls?

  1. Unfortunately, nothing like this has suprised me for many years now. I recently had an antique steel trellis stolen from my front garden.

Just last Sunday, May 6, while I was working in my front yard (1000 block of NE 96th) for 10 minutes at most, someone walked into my open back door, into my bedroom, then made off with cash and prescription meds. So, be sure to keep your doors locked, even if you’re away from those doors for only a few minutes. This especially holds true for those of you with alleys behind your house, as is the case where I live.

As the SPD’s North Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator, Terrie Johnston, told me, the warm weather, which causes us to open our doors/windows, makes us all an attractive target. Never underestimate the boldness of these theives. And, as Ms. Johnston clearly states, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you see anything suspicious.

  2. Pretty low no doubt. One can only hope it made someones elses mom happy today and they don’t know their kid is a thief.
My 90 year old mom has had hanging plants stolen around this day too.Who does that? Luckily we are in a position to replace them for her.

  3. Yep folks are right about the Mother’s Day connection. Maybe it’s time to have fewer greeting card holidays — so that thieves won’t be tempted to steal presents for their moms.

  4. I moved to the North End from West Seattle about a year and a half ago. While I lived there, someone stole my (very heavy) glazed pottery pot planted with impatiens, right from my front step!

  5. We’ve had our flag and flagpole stolen in the past year, if you can believe it.

One time we accidentally left the car unlocked; they ended up not stealing anything from it, including the cheapo candybar cell phone we keep in there for emergencies, but they did reset to factory settings (though fortunately we didn’t have any contact information saved on it in the first place).

  6. Mother’s Day. Seriously, lots of planters are stolen right before Mother’s Day. I had really nice one on my back patio filled with flowers and it was stolen right before Mother’s Day. This happened a couple of years ago.
