The city’s crime map is showing yet another  robbery at the popular Northgate Transit Center, 10200 First Ave. N.E.. It’s the third (at least) similar offense there in recent months involving iPod, iTouch and iPhone devices.

This time police report that a new student at the University of Washington, who had only been in the country for a few days, was waiting for a bus back to his dorm at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.

A group of approximately five men approached the student; one of them asked him for “a buck so he could get home on the bus,” according to the police report.

The student was listening to his iPod, and one of the men snatched it from his hands. All the men ran off toward the nearby cinema, police said.

In June, officers were called to the center just before 8:30 p.m. Two men waiting for a bus said a group of six men approached them, grabbed their iTouch devices, and ran off, according to a police report. No suspects were located.

In April a woman waiting for a bus was pepper-sprayed in the face at about 3 p.m. by one of four women who attempted to steal her iPhone, police report.

  1. It would cost a couple hundred dollars to add surveillance at that transit station. A couple cameras on the platforms and maybe a few in the parking lot (I don’t know if there is a break in problem there, I’ve left my car there overnight a few times with no problems, but it couldn’t hurt). These thefts are just highschool kids coming over from the movie theater or waiting for the bus, taking advantage of a situation with no surveillance and where they completely outnumber someone. Thorton Place and Metro should easily be able to find a cheap solution to this.

  2. Stop blaming everything on cyclists. Do you have any proof that a “lion’s share” is going to cyclists, because I don’t believe that is true. I also support more security for transit.

  3. I take the nasty 358 home rather than the 348 to NG to pick up the 16 simply because I don’t feel safe at the NG transit center. I take the 16 and 348 to work in the morning, but there’s no way I’m going to sit at the NG transit center when it gets dark and just hope that these little ‘hoods don’t try to take my backpack. Surveillance cameras would help.

  4. Is it too much trouble or money for Seattle to spend a little money on some surveillance cameras? This repeated type of petty crime is disgusting. Who would want to take Metro? Time to stop handing the lion’s share of the taxpayers’ money over to”wish lists” for cyclists and time to do something about safety for riders at this transit station!!!!
