The mysterious missing yellow buttons and bumps

First it was potholes. Boy, did folks get  incensed about them.

Now on the Maple Leaf street scene we have the vanishing yellow buttons, or bumps, or whatever the city calls them.

We’ll have to wait for the work week to ask the Seattle Department of Transportation, but our guess is these missing yellow buttons on Roosevelt Way Northeast are the victims of last week’s snow, and were scraped up by snowplows.

Meanwhile, Dan writes with a different question: “The yellow bumps that get put on new sidewalks are gone from the new sidewalks on 15th NE between NE 95th and NE 97th; there’s only one left at NE 97th.

“They were there Wednesday night at 11pm, we believe, and were gone by 3pm Thursday.”

Any answers to either of these mysteries?

  1. Is it just me that finds driving on Roosevelt in either direction has become a dangerous challenge especially at low light, dusk and night time?
Low visibility, switch back lines, fading paint, non reflective lines. Disappearing bike lanes as center lane abruptly moves over.Old trace of original center line can out show the new faded yellow striping. As mapleleaf residents we are learning to negotiate this on a daily basis. The street now is so busy with different markings it almost feels harder to see the patient pedestrians who need to cross at the fading crosswalks. Everytime I drive it I feel like I just drove an obstacle course. Perhaps we could invite an official non resident city member to negotiate Roosevelt Way. Hmm I wonder what the mayor is doing…..maybe he could ride his bike over!

  2. hmmm… I always wondered if they weren’t really an ADA-approved method to let the visually impaired ‘drive by Braille’. At least, that’s what most people around here seem to use them for!

  3. I’ve noticed that the bike lane striping, that caused so much traffic distruption, last fall has all but disappeared in many pleases along Roosevelt. Is this also going to be address by the DOT — or just some “well spent” public dollars.
